So, our hacking out on our own is going quite well, getting less spooky and we are both enjoying ourselves more. Just walking for now, which suits us both fine. Today we got overtaken (nice polite lady on joggy horse) at the top of the canter track, that we had walked up, and P got very upset at being left behind. He didn't do anything bad, but it felt like he was looking for a gap in my approach so he could whizz off after said attractive mare. I turned him in tight circles until he calmed himself and then we continued on our way. So view please....would working even more on my leadership (constant project) make him less inclined, or is this simply him being a horse? Any any other tips for handling it when it happens....might not always be in a place where we can faff about like that!

Hi dianen,Im not as experienced as most on here, but didnt want to read without leaving a reply Maybe try lateral movements to get his attention back to you,and if in a difficult place what about turning and walking back the way you came for so long then turning back or using transitions to get him listening to you? Also would say that yes he is being a horse, however, its you he has to respect and listen to,i find that doing in-hand work is fantastic at helping to show leadership which then transfers too when you are riding. Like i said i am in no way as experienced as others, and they will be able to advise you much better than i can, these are just things i have found have worked for me (at times) ;D.......but i still have a long, long, long way to go to achieve that level of experience...... Hope this helps even a little,if not im very sorry! Rie x

Sounds like he's just being a horse tbh. Both mine would want to follow a horse that overtook us and I would have great difficulty with one of them in particular if I then went a different way. I think I would maybe have just stopped and let him graze and settle for a good 10 minutes so the other horse was well gone. (it's Julie with Phe & Kass by the way, assuming you're the Di with P that I know! , if you are we can work out a strategy for when we meet up for a hack on Sunday. )
