On the morning after a wonderful demonstration at Aintree which 27 of us attended Kelly and Monty visited Shy Lowen. I still can't quite believe it but all the photos we took prove it happened. When they arrived first of all they met some of the horses and ponies and they met a number of our Care Committee – the young people who invest so much of their time and energy into keeping the sanctuary's horses healthy and happy.
We then went into our Education Centre (grandly named classroom) where everyone split into teams and Monty and Kelly hosted a quiz as everyone was too shy to ask questions. The shyness soon evaporated once the competitive spirit came through and there were several accusations of cheating being bandied about at high volume. 12 year old Tyler was so vehement that she earned the title of 'budding attourney'. Monty sat in the midst of this with a lovely smile and the kids all love him.
Questions then came forth and Monty answered them with his lovely way of being able to tell aa story. I missed the next bit because I saw through the window that Bailey, one of our permanent equine residents, had managed to roll next to a big bale of haylage in our very muddy field and somehow get one hind leg inside the bale and the other hind leg on top of the bale. He needed to be rescued from his predicament – he was fine. Kelly followed down to help but we'd managed to get him sorted quite quickly so she didn't need to get extra muddy and he ambled off with an embarrassed look on his face.......
While we were gone one of our young people Lillie had told Monty about her favourite Shy Lowen horse Fred. He'd come to us after he had a series of blackouts which, in spite of extensive tests, had remained unexplained and ended his dressage career. Lillie cried when she told Monty that she wanted Fred to be happy and well. Monty hugged her and she now has on her Facebook status
'How many people can say they've cried on Monty Roberts shoulder huh? ♥ One of our visitors told Monty how he'd changed her life, this was a theme for many of the visitors who spoke with with us about his work.
Monty and Kelly (well mostly Monty lol) then planted a Rowan Mountain Ash tree for us and stood by the plaque commemorating their visit for photos.
Lillie brought Fred in from the field for Monty to meet just before Kelly and Monty left and Monty told Lillie that 20 year old Fred looks very happy so all Lillie needs to do is continue keeping him calm, caring for him and loving him because he's similar to an old uncle who might lose control of his limbs and senses when he gets excited. Lillie was very happy with this.
It was a wonderful, wonderful two hours. For Kelly and Monty to have given us their time, compassion and energy has touched me beyond words. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making us feel so special. xxxxxxxxx
