My inaugural post since becoming IH member and accessing this DG! Thought I would let you know that I had just the BEST session with my Standardbred, Boo, the other day. We are not what you would call a "match made in heaven" as I am a novice and he is an ex harness-racer, stiff as an ironing board, whose ridden career was limited to hunting before I got him 2 years ago. Neither of us are brave. We have been sparring for the last few months, sometimes making progress, sometimes not, but this week, it seemed to just "click"! He was relaxed in the school, interested and seeming to enjoy himself. He softened and came on to the bit and we were able to achieve trot without the massive "launch" that throws me off balance. We even went round corners without the "knees down TT-racer" experience! My instructor (my daughter!) told me he looked like he was floating on air. ;D Don't get me wrong, I know that we will have some not-so-good days again, but this was SO worth persevering for! Could it be a coincidence that I have also just re-read Kelly's Perfect Confidence book? I think not! Just one ride like the one I had, has given me such a boost. I can't wait to get back on him again!

Thanks for your warm welcome! Just to let you know that I followed up that ride with a major hack yesterday, taking Boo to his "summer fields" ( had to rent some more as there was no grass left at their yard). Went through 2 villages and some bridleways. Also had to contend with a fairly busy road which had a car boot sale, a horse show, a field of donkeys and some articulated lorries on it! I confess that I did dismount there. I felt that Boo was in "full panic" mode and it simply wasn't safe to stay on. (I noticed there was a post about "get off or stay on". In this case, I felt getting off was definitely the right decision). A group of trials bikers came up behind us and, bless them, sat 3 abreast, stopping traffic skimming past us, and switched their engines off. So kind! ;D So we made it, very tired, but happy. I am soooo proud of my boy. (I'm pretty chuffed with myself, to be honest!) If I can work the technical bits, here is a picture of Boo and me at our very first show (in hand) together last year!
