You've had a horse for 4 years, they are good on the ground, very sweet and respectful, but when ridden they can be very spooky which scares you. You have tried to get on with it and improve your confidence, but it got to the point where you felt sick if you had to go and ride your horse. You stopped riding for 6 months over the winter and you didn't miss it, although you still like doing groundwork with your horse. You want to hack out and canter and have fun, but you are too scared to do it on your horse, you have been out on other horses and had great fun. You think about selling your horse but your horse is 18 and has a few minor health issues and you've heard horror stories from people who have loaned out horses.
What would you do?

I have one of these. Scared the life out of me last time I rode her, and dropped me on tarmac from a great height. She went to Twemlows to be a recipient mare for Embryo Transfer. I was lucky that she was the height, type and age they wanted. She is now home after 2 years and I am not as scared of her as I was... she is just starting in hand work again now. Don't know if I will ever ride her again but she has a home for life. I could never sell or loan, because I would hate not knowing what had happened to her. I am lucky enough to have my own land, but even if I had her at livery, I would not sell/loan. This is just my personal opinion - I can see that things may be different for you if you can't afford to keep her as a field ornament and have another to ride. Is there any possibility of finding a confident unscareable sharer for her, and then finding something nice for you to share? Whereabouts in Shropshire are you by the way, just being nosey, I am just over the border in Powys

If you love your horse and enjoy spending time with him and would worry and feel guilty if you sold him on then keep him! No need to ride as long as he is healthy and happy and you can do things to keep life interesting even walks out in hand. You could however find a sharer, have an RA out to help with his spooking and your confidence or keep playing with him and build his confidence gradually by doing ground work and walking in hand/long lining while riding other horses you feel safe on and who knows maybe when you become more confident at riding and he becomes more confident and less spooky you might feel that you would like to ride him again, it might be months or years but if there is no pressure and you are both happy who cares

She's not a forum person She's recently started Parelli in hopes that the ridden element helps her to be more confident.

I've had my boy 11mths (almost) & love him to bits
He's got issues with his confidence & so have I He goes up.....I go up !!!! Done loads of groundwork & he's never made me feel unsafe , But, he goes up...I go up..... Because he's very green when ridden, he goes up.... I go up...
Answer for me is to get help with my confidence issues/ work on being able to let go & relax, as he feeds of my reactions & we end up in a downward spiral
He's never thrown me or hurt me in any way, but, I know I need to sort out myself to help him to be confident in me, and therefore in himself
Hope that makes sense.
Would I sell him No way It's me that needs sorting out ;D

My youngster is just being started and I know I have confidence issues which bubble to the surface when I am least expecting them. I'm going on a 2 day Confidence Course at Hartsop.
Jen - your clinic sounds fabulous.
