What is reiki?
In its original Japanese form in the 1900s Reiki was very much about working on yourself: it was a system that you could use for self-healing, self-development and spiritual development. But since Reiki was first taught in the West in the 1970s, Reiki teaching has focused much more on Reiki as a complementary treatment technique.
Reiki can be defined as a system of energy healing or energy medicine. In the West, it is practiced in a similar way to spiritual healing, and is based around the channeling of a form of spiritual energy.
This energy is known as ki (Japan), chi (China) or prana (India). Ki exists in the world around us, within all living things, and it also surrounds us (the aura).
The proper flow and amount of this energy is essential to our health and well-being. It is when there is not enough life energy or it is moving too slowly that illness can result. In Reiki, this energy is channeled from the Divine through a Reiki Practitioner to a client, and works to harmonise the energy within the body. By doing so, the body is encouraged to heal itself on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.
