At minus 12 I have decided to rug and am having trouble finding a rug to fit my boy. He is an arab but has quite a high wither and big chest. So far I have tried premier equine which cut into the back of his neck. Amigo which did the same. Rhino wug which is the best so far but a bit tight on the chest. Which makes of rug do people find fits these horses best?

could you use a chest expander on the Rhino wug? if it fits else where? might just add that bit extra room round the front, Apollo has to have them as he is sooo broad up front!

I find if I get a bigger (or wider) rug it will slip over the back of his wither and then dig in.
I use a rug with buckles at the front, then do the top one up one or two holes wider than the lower one. It does let more rain in that way but it seems to be the only way I can stop them slipping back or pulling very tight across his wither when he puts his head down.

Which Amigo did you try? My high withered TB is waring an Amigo and it goes over his withers and has shown no signs of rubbing. It is a medium weight 1200 plus which has a detachable neck cover.

i have had this difficulty with my arabx, he has such high withers that his saddle needs mega padding at the back to fit. weatherbeater seems to fit him best for rugs with built in neck, the landa freestyle especially is quite good - not sure: do they still do it? make sure you go for ones with the movement pannels at the front legs as they help to stop rubbing and are good for wide chested horses.
alternatively do what i do with my older rugs from previous horses and put a rug which rubs a bit on with either a fleece that fits well underneath or a rub guard ie elasticated bib-thingie (not sure what they are actually called). My boy lost a lot of hair on his chest and when the bib was put on he started to get it back again. they can get quite wet and often show at the bottom but they dry really quickly, are stretchy so fit well and i don't think are too expensive, it saves throwing out all your old rugs.
We also find saxon effective, my mum has a highland so he is very wide at the front and he fits really well into saxon.

Also had success using an Amigo with a chest expander. Maybe try your Rhino with a chest expander if it was the best fit?

My broad chested big withered Tb is in an Amigo 1200, but a size bigger than she theoretically needs which I think is the key thing. It's been the answer to all my prayers

Amigo for mine as well but always a size bigger, then they come up over the withers, the 1200 denier are cut a lot more generously than the 600d IME.

Oooh I never thought of a chest expander - do they do them for the wug style though or just for normal fronted rugs The Amigo I tried was normal size but the length was ok Im worried if I went up to 6'3" it would swamp him

My high-withered TB is in a weatherbeeta landa with an integral neck, which I have found to be fantastic. Mind you, she certainly isn't broad chested.

My High withered, big shouldered TBx fitted the FAL rugs perfectly - I always get half or full neck rugs to avoid the problem of rug seams applying pressure on the withers. I know FAL have changed hands recently and are no longer made in teh UK but it's probably worth trying one cos I shouldn't imagine they've changed the shape of horse that they make rugs to fit!
