Saw this on H&H forum, it just beggars belief! tinyurl.com/2wtelurAnyone want a cheap/useless ex-international SJ? Won his onwers/rider thousands (won £70k at one show!!) but now passed his usefulness. I know horses get sold, but this is just so sad, poor old chap!

So sad, and I used to love seeing this boy jump, he was a real character. I would have him like a shot, sadly I dont have £750. If she will let him go to a good home though hmmmm might be worth a call.

I don't think it was his present owner for whom he won that money - and to be fair she is looking for a good home where he can enjoy life and still do what he can do only more quietly. I think if only she was looking to loan it would be fine - but having loaned once I would never, ever do it again.

This woman is a dealer! could be that this horse has been her personal horse for the last three years? but its interesting that she puts NO DEALERS in her advert! Poor lad, hope he finds a lovely home to live out his days happily.

Apparently he was ridden by Michael Whittaker, so very sad.

That is what happens to competition horses as they get older. They go down in value with each change of ownership and the last owner does not feel any responsibility for the horse as they have not had it long. And his legs will be old in terms of how much work they have done, he has been all over the world jumping. To get and keep a horse up to that level of competition takes a lot of schooling work which does wear their legs out faster. He is probably only up to being an expensive companion and should in fairness either be loaned out or put to sleep.

On H&H forum it says the dealer only paid £500 for him and now wants £750 three years later, talk about getting your pound of flesh.

Agree with Donna, after doing that sort of work he's lucky this hasn't happened sooner.

Does anyone remember the outcry against police horses being PTS at the end of their working lives? I for one think it is a kindness for these old competition horses as well. They have been used to being stabled and having a job to do - retirement doesn't come easy to them, they don't usually enjoy it much.

Trying to get rid at 20, lame for money is low in my book. I agree PTS might be kinder.

I agree Jill, a friend of mine bought an advanced dressage horse, that had once been the ride of a top GP rider, and she had a hellish time getting him used to being turned out! He'd stand at the gate and weave, and fence walk for months. Luckily he still had a lot to give and had ten years with my friend.

sadly PTS is probably more money than they want to fork out and want to lump that cost and responsibility on someone else
