An update from Black Hill Horse Training
It has been very busy at Old Shawls Farm with youngsters and remedial horses in training and horsemanship courses. We have been really enjoying meeting new horses and people as well as catching up with the progress of some of our regular horse owners and their horses. It is always rewarding to hear how everything is going and how much the horses have improved due to their owners continued consistent work.
We have been working with lots of problem loaders on visits as the show season started as well as remedial horses and ponies.
On a sadder note we have had a few youngsters in training to be started under saddle either western or English who have turned out to have hock problems and premature arthritis. In some cases it was down to too much work previously when they were too young, an old injury or possibly hereditary. This once again highlights the importance of having your horse vetted before you buy so you know if your horse can cope physically with what you want him/her to do. Also as foals they often get into mischief, if something happens please ensure you get him/her checked out at the time. As we are getting youngsters in training at 4yrs who have been carrying around old injuries and learned a way of moving to compensate.
As always we really appreciate as do our owners our Equine Vet Graham Terry from Herefordshire Equine and Hannah Mansfield Thomas our Equine Physio, we have become a team and between us can eliminate sources of pain as well as highlighting any possible problems. It is always sad to see horses at such young ages with physical problems that you would expect an older horse to have.
We have just made our hay so are feeling more prepared for winter, can’t believe we are in August already!
