A livery said to me earlier that she watched Hanni trying to pass urine and he got himself into position but kept going backwards almost like he was too uncomfortable to pass urine. Now I watched him earlier and he did pass urine although only a small amount. He is eating and drinking well (when water is not frozen overnight!) and is himself although currently on meds for a ? respiratory infection. He is on Trimediazine, ventipulmin and equipalazone. Now he had this problem in the summer and was on the same meds but it cleared up much quicker. He still seems to be coughing now even being on meds for a week. I will ring vet on mon as we are looking into endoscope to establish problem. Should I be worried about what the livery said? Do you think its just because of the snow and he is worried about the cold? He has an open barn he can use too and maybe he does at night or when we aren't there. Am I just being over anxious/paranoid? What do you think? Thanks

Hmm while waiting for the vet I would suggest you check his sheath is clean (lots of advice on that on other threads!) also mix warm water with his meals to make sure he's getting liquid in him. They sometimes prefer to drink warmed water as well. This is NOT replacing vet advice! (To anyone reading).

Are you sure he isn't dehydrated ? especially if he cannot drink at night. We our keeping our field troughs de frosted but the horses are still having a lot to drink when they first come in at teatime ? I would be having a word with my vet NOW if I were you

Vet calling me in a minute they are quite busy. He as had long drinks today when I ensured that he had plenty of water to drink and i've re-filled a huge bucket tonight. Thanks for the comments. Will check sheath tom and boil some water in yard so he can have a warm meal. Hope he is ok. He is behaving like his usual self.

Spoke to vet. He has put me at ease a little. He is not too concerned if Hanni is eating and drinking. Vet did suggested like you Kelly that horses tend to prefer tepid/warm water to freezing so may try and encourage that in the morning. He also suggested putting a teaspoon of salt for a couple of days in his feed so that it encourages him to drink more. He said if there was an infection that would have been resolved by the antibiotics he is having at mo for his respiratory condition. Going to see how much water he has had by the morning as at the moment his field mate is on holiday so easy to monitor with only him in that field (friends over the fence). Animals can be such a worry but I wouldn't be without him :-) Just hope vet bills don't get too high as insurance won't cough up for illnesses :-(

I have a horse that some times does small wee's or stands for one then doesn't do one. And i give him global herbs, 'restore' which flushes the systems which can be good while or after they have been on anti boi's or med's to balence things again. I wouldn't panic but do keep an eye on him. Good luck
