There is an article in the Horse Scene Magazine Dec/Jan09 issue. Friend at yard gave it to me as she said she had found my horse Caspar in an article "Eye Injuries" So I looked at it and on the laceration to eye lid repair and after surgery to repair a month on there was Caspars eye.
No joke it is him, even down to the wall eye with a black mark on lower lid.
All i know about him so far is that he was owned by a family whos children had grown older and lost interest. I've had him about 2.5 mths now.
Anyway i e-mailed the editor of the magazine with details and picture of caspars eye and she replied within 24 hrs and said she believes it is 100% him. Given name and details of vet practice. So i am going to phone tommorow.
Gulp! What if i find out more than i bargained for. Would you phone?
Please support me, i am very nervous.
Thanks.

I would definately phone. Take a deep breath and do it... At least you can gain further history into Casper which can only help you both in the future.
Good Luck hope all goes well.

Definately phone, the more you know about your horse the more you can understand them and their quirks. Lets us know what you find out
Good luck

Have phoned up the vets. She tried to help. Said to e-mail with picture, which i have. She will tell him when he gets back from is calls. She also said that she doubts he can tell me anything due to data protection act. I would have to have contact with the original owner to have their permission to say anything atall. So i am unsure what i can do. I doubt the dealer will let me have any details of original owner. But i do know he has them.
Any ideas of what i can do?

Well I think the first thing is to contact the dealer, and ask him for the origional owners details - or ask him to pass your mobile /phone number on and say you would just like to talk to them about the horse. I wouldnt mention the vet thing at the moment - just test the water and see how he / she reacts. When you get the origional owners number - then you can ask them if he has had any medical issues?.xx

Thanks iceberg. Just feel that the dealer will not want to know anything about it if i mention article or not.

wonder if vet might be able to pass on message to old owner that you wish to speak to them??give them your number etc, and then its up to them to ring you if they wish. not sure if vet will want to ring them or not etc, but could ask if desperate

Maybe you could write a letter to the old owners, put it in a stamped envelope and ask the vets if they would post it to them?

Will it make any difference to your relationship? He had a cut on his eye lid and it was fixed. He is still the wonderful horse you own. It is sometimes interesting to know of things that have happened, but no matter what has happened to our beloved horse in the past, we have to deal with the horse we have now. Don't be concerned about what you might find out, or about what happened to him, it is in the past and what is happening now is all that Casper cares about.

well is there anything about him for you to worry about! if not then i would acknowledge it happened and move on. unless there is a problem and knowing about his past may help, then i wouldnt worry too much, these things happen and not much we can do about it!

You can ask your vet to contact the original vet, they can release details one vet to another. I did this with a dog I rescued, original vet couldn't give me the details but passed on full history to my vet.

I like that thought anniearab. Or i could get my vet to ask for details.
However at the moment he said he would try and contact the original owners and see if they will give permission to let him tell me about him, what he knows anyway.
The vet is very nice so far and has said he was called Jasper and had a passport. How similar i should call him Caspar. So where the passport went i do not know. Strange!
It is like a sherlock Holmes! This is. Creepy!

its quite possible it was lost by the dealer, by accident or for some reason or another. I wouldnt stress about it too much, although it can be nice to be in contact from owners from the past, and know info, it can equally open a whole can of worms you wish you hadnt found!
