Hi,
My Christmas money this year is going towards some much needed riding lessons. I haven't had any for about four years, and consider myself a difficult pupil, as I hate being shouted at, patronised or demeaned. My confidence can come and go, so I need to be corrected, praised and nurtured.
Unfortunately, I have always found most freelances fall into the teaching style described above, and I am terrified of trying to find an instructor who will help me develop in a sympathetic manner. I imagine I will end up wasting a lot of money on bad advice.
So, how do you go about finding an instructor who understands horses and some basic human compassion? I've been watching other people's lessons, and have a list of instructors who I would not let within a mile of me, but not found a single one who I would have a trial lesson with! What do I need to ask people when I phone?
Anyone near Tamworth / Atherstone have any recommendations?

Oh, that was something else that I wanted to ask - does holding a BHS qualification necessarily mean that I am getting a decent instructor?! I have seen many appalling qualified BHS instructors, and have had some friends who have just been able to put me right after watching me ride for a few minutes!
You need to do some kind of speedy instructor course Portiabuzz! Given a few years who knows what my lower legs will be up to?! I feel like they are already trying to make a bid for freedom.

Well i have seen some very bad teaching from those who are highly (bhs) qualified, and i do not agree with everything im learning. I will do some IH courses to further my knowledge when trained as i do agree with it!
However bhs instructors (should be) registered & insured, so look on the bhs website for a list in the area. All i can say is be honest with them about what you want and see how they respond!
I will try to get qualified as speedily as possible as I want to help people like you! Best of luck xx

I can put myself forward as a non-shouty instructor, who loves to work with those lacking in confidence. I use a lot of imagery in my teaching and try to find the way that each rider learns best and use that to encourage the best out of them. I am not too far from you, but Iwould need to check things out if you are interested. I mostly teach at home now, but do go out a couple of times a week, and try to group clients together, or make a round route.
My only constraint is time, as I also have a livery yard to run which takes up the majority of my time. PM me if you would like a chat.

I have seen a high level BHS instructor beat a horse up, when she thought nobody was looking and it was a client's horse who would have been devasted if she had seen this. Just because the horse would not go into the stable. So no go with someone your comfortable with or on recommendation. Qualifications although look good on paper, reputation holds a lot more standing.

Hi bryjk, You're in my area as an IHRA and BHSAI, I'm based in Stafford. Take a look at my website www.holistichorsehelp.com, or on my IHRA showcase on this DG, for some more info about me. Have only been in Stafford for less than a year, so reputation in this area was still building (although have been busy pretty much since we arrived here!), was previously flat out with work in Bucks (but houses are sooooo expensive there, and absolutely no chance ever of getting anywhere with any land for anything near an achievable price!). I do my best with basic human compassion! I reckon I'm one of the most difficult and demanding students ever, and am really fussy about who I will have lessons from, for me I've found that I just need to try a lesson with someone and then I get a feel as to whether I want more! Drop me an email if I can help, Sue
