Worm the mare as normal but check the packaging because I believe Equest Preamox is not suitable for in foal mares We always worm at 8 week intervals alternating eqvalan type wormers and the tape worm type twice a year. Worm the foal with the correct weight ivermectin type at four weeks and monthly therafter until a year old then that too goes onto the eight week routine once grown to 18 months we then worm as per worm counts poo pick daily and this often worked out at about twice or three times a year twice for tape worm and once for encysted redworm

We use Equest Pramox on our infoal mares. It is listed in their packaging as not suitable for infoal mares, but from what I gather, this is not because it is unsafe, but rather is a licensing matter - it would be very costly to license it in the UK, and it is just not worth it for them. In Australia, there is a wormer licensed for infoal mares which carries the same ingredients in almost exactly the same quantities, and it is fine - but it has been licensed there. We have been using it for a few years now, with no problems at all. I would however emphasise that I am telling you what I do, I am not telling anyone else what they should do.
Once foals are born, we use either Equimax or Eraquell until they are six months old, then they go onto Equest / Equest Pramox with the other stock, as this is when it is safe for them.

my mares are wormed a month before foaling using either Panacure Strongid P or Eqvalan, all of which are known to be safe. My foals are wormed according to the program set out by Janet Lorch in her book " from foal to full Grown " It has been scientifically proved that when foals sometimes scour when their mother has her foaling heat -------------around 10 days after foaling, it is NOT due to the milk changing, it is because the foal has already picked up a few worms ( regardless of how well your mare is wormed or how clean your land is ) By first worming your foal at 10days this stops the risk of scouring. I have done this for many years now with great success. The foal is then wormed every 3 weeks for the first 12 weeks after the first worming then every 4 weeks up to a year old. I only use the wormers as stated above in this program as they are safe for foals and brood mares and carry no risk of making them ill. Hope that helps
