Hi all.
Just wondering has anyone ever used road plainings or some other material to reduce mud from a field so it becomes like a hard-standing from them on? ? ?
Looking to do something with the fields, as the mud is getting ridiculous.
Thanks.

We have but they are on a membrane and hard core base. They work very well that way but I suspect if you just dumped them on mud they'd disappear.

I have in the past for outside some stables. The mud was originally over knee deep and add in the run-off from the stables and it was just disgusting. We kept throwing rubble in which just disappeared ibto the mud. When we eventually got the rubble above mud level we topped it with road planings to finish the surface.

I put 64 tonnes of them down in November. There will be more in the spring but it got too wet. I now have 3/4s of a crew yard area 25m x 30m plus gate ways done and drive topped up. You do nee to roll it i=with a vibrating plate or if a large area a roller to settle the surface to create that hard surface you see in rough carparks and yards YOu have to have a firm base and then preferably a membrane before the road plaining ( the next cheapest thing is crusher run ) or you are just throwing you money away.

Thanks for the help.
I was basically going to get a machine to scrape away the top soil, i.e. the muddy bits, then put a membrane down, some hardcore, and then road planings.

Approximately how much would it cost for membrane, etc,. for a gateway area?

Thanks for the help. I was basically going to get a machine to scrape away the top soil, i.e. the muddy bits, then put a membrane down, some hardcore, and then road planings. That's exactly how we did ours. It wasn't a cheap option but it has been very successful. Make the area bigger than you think you want it. We had to extend some of ours the following winter as they were a bit small.

A roll of geotextile (Terram 1000 for example) will cost about £250.00 - £300.00 for a 450m2 roll, although it might be possible to buy it in smaller quantities.
Planings straight off a job might be your cheapest option but that might sometimes mean taking delivery during the night when a lot of work is actually done. You'll pay something like £7.50 a tonne if that's the case, as much as double if they're off a stockpile. The conversion factor is something like 2.25 tonnes needed for every cubic metre.
