Neets according to weight tape is around the 600kg mark... standing approx 16hh.. now she's not the chunkiest monkey out there and isn't overwieght... But whenever I read a feedmakers directions or wormer directions 600kg is a LARGE horse... ? Large to me is over 17hh and I'm sure they must weight considerably more than 600kg... Is Neets out of proportion i.e. larger girth than your average 16hh horse.. (yes to me 16hh is about average height for a horse)? NB her girth size is 48" - 50" which to my mind isn't very large???

16hh to me is a big horse but then I'm only 5ft 4in LOL. My TB Basil (16.1hh) can get to 600kg if he's not working. 600kg is the limit I set when I know I need to work him or restrict his grazing or haylage. When he's very fit he's about 550kg ish. Racing fit Basil: 620kg on ad lib haylage (in full winter woolies) Basil:

My 15.1 midgets tape at between 450 - 490 kg, so 600kg does seem big to me

This is where worming companies have got it so wrong IMHO, and are contributing to the widespread resistance amongst worms, to worming drugs, by encouraging owners to underdose with wormer. A 600kg+ horse wormed with only enough wormer for a 600kg horse, is only getting a portion of the active drug, therefore the worms are exposed to a sub-lethal dose of wormer, become resistant, etc, etc, etc. And so it perpetuates. With NO new worming drugs coming out any time soon, we are in real danger of having no effective drugs with which to worm our horses in the future if we don't all start to be more careful.
*Climbs down off soapbox....*
Yes, I would say she will be around the 600kg mark. Cosworth is 16.3hh tb x, could never be described as chunky, and weighed 626kgs on a weighbridge when he was coming off box rest and had no muscle.
Virbac, who make Equimax and Eraquell, sell their wormer in syringes which treat up to 700kgs I think. So if you "large" horse owners worm with a different wormer, be prepared to buy two syringes in order to get the correct dosage!
And she is large anyway, compared to little Gazdag who is only about 15.1hh. Don't know how much he weighs but I guess somewhere between 500-550kgs! I dose him with wormer at around 550kgs anyway to be on the safe side and account for that little bit they always manage to spit out. You have to be really going some to actually manage to seriously overdose on most worming drugs, so I always think a little bit extra is better than a little bit too little...

Hi yes I know I use equimax simply because I know I can dose correctly for weight on one syringe... ........ And she is large anyway, compared to little Gazdag who is only about 15.1hh. ... but that's only a 3 inch difference I know it's all comparative but there are so many bigger horses than Neets

PS - Cosworth always weigh-taped at around 560kgs, so was at least 50kgs out when weighed on a weigh-bridge. Careful with relying on tape measurements!!

The other thing is to me Neets is what you would call a middle weight hunter which to me implies average.... ?

My lad is a 17.2hh TB.... He weights in at 695kg at the moment. I would classify him as a LARGE horse...16hh to me is small

Thanks Zusan, Your lass is lovely too Just to add, Dexter is large in the girth and a weight tape reads him at about 730kg's but I took him to a weight bridge and found this to be inaccurate.

that's interesting that the wieght tape had him HEAVIER than his true weight..
Shows that weight tapes can be wrong both ways.. under estimating as well as over estimating..

I agree with this so much... all mine weigh tape heavier than I or the vet guessed! Little ones are especially difficult to 'guess'!! Vet always guestimates them all around 200Kgs but they all tape at over 200!! It really is best to use a weighbridge if possible and every worming time too. Sophie is around 16hh TBx with deep girth and she tapes at 590/600 Kgs usually. She has been over 600 in the past. Neets looks just right to me Zuzan.

Just out of interest, the BHS course I did last year suggested 100kg/hand over 10hh, so a 16hh would be about 600kg. Personally I think he looks lovely, Zuzan you're a lucky person!

I weigh taped my arab x andalusian who is about 15hh and I have to admit is very fat - you literally can't find any evidence of ribs at all - and he weighed in at 575kgs I know he's fat (and in fairness he's a wide horse) but that must be too much! Don't forget also, that if they have a thick winter coat when you measure them this will make them show us as heavier with the tape.
