I found these photo indexes are helpful for people who do not know how to condition score.. does anyone know if there is a better one out there already? Updated with better/different photos including different breeds

lol refering to the 'bum shot' some times they can be quite good for comparing i guess, but sometimes see just 'bum shots' isnt really enough to be able to score from i feel, but a mixture of several would be good!

and forgot to say i think after looking at that, Saxon is about 3.5 so needs a bit more suitable exercise, and Toffee is prob a 3, is hard with her as she is old, and has quite a sunken back and a 'pot belly' appearance, yet she had quite a boney bum! has put a bit of weight on since winter, and people have said she looks better now. glad she lost a bit over winter, as meant she can have a bit more grass in spring/summer

It's really helpful to see condition scoring pics with odd shaped horses....someone I know would be desperately feeding up numbers 2 and 3 saying that she would like more rounded hind quarters and doesn't like to be able to see withers (!)

i'd say the first 2 pictures the horses are half dead!!!thats beyond poor and theres a huge difference between 2 and three,i'd like to see some healthy horses in the photos not ones that are dying in fact i found them very shocking, noone would want a horse to look like that, maybe find some others that arent so shockingly obvious.

it would be excellent if these sort of pictures went in mags as a warning, so many people I know think 5 is Ok. I had a horse at condition 2 going out to lush summer grazing and i was publically ridiculed for "Starving it" on another forum. Well odne for puttin gthis together.

The timelines for 1 to 3 is approx 2 months and 5 to 3 would take over 8 months with possible long term damage.. so a 'poor' horse is so much better of than a 'obese' horse but which one do you see the most.

This has been cool for looking at Cinny - she was probably a 2 during the autumn/winter/early spring, now she's probably approaching a 3, so just trying to keep her stable now. As don't want chubby pone

Of course no one would want a horse to look like that but this is a condition scoring system and that's what horses with that condition score look like. I'd agree there isn't much difference between the first two pictures and quite a big difference between 2 and 3. We all get shocked by thin horses when in reality, getting a very thin horse back to a sensible weight is considerably easier than getting a fat horse back to a sensible weight - assuming there wasn't a health issue that caused the horse to lose weight in the first place. We should be more shocked by obese horses but we see so many of them that it seems normal and not particularly notable. However, obese horses have all sorts of long term health issues - laminitis, ring bone, side bone, arthritis etc. Very thin horses have no long term health issues once they're back up to weight.

Agree with June. A condition scoring system isn't a beauty parade, a horse with a condition score of 0-1 *will* look awful, that's the point! People should be aiming for 2-3. Surprised that you're not as outraged at pics 4-5, which as June rightly points out, have just as many if not more serious health concerns as pics 0-1.
