My own bum is somewhere between a 4 and a 5, although I have never thought of myself as "cresty".

This is a good thread, going by these pics my mare is 'good' in the summer months but I would say she can sometimes drop to 'Moderate' in the winter - she isn't a big eater anyway & a poor doer.
I have to say I do know of an 'Obese' pony and infact he looks just like the pony in that picture - he's so obese he gets rain water sitting in a puddle in his back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now can someone please do something similar about this crest/no crest thing. Everyone seems to have different ideas about what it means - and some ponies seem to naturally have more crest than others, (or am i excusing them being naturally overweight?? ;D ) What part of the crest should you go by, one pony I've looked at has a marked crest on the lower third, but not on the rest of the neck, she doesn't look particularly fat on the rest of her. What is the rule of thumb for this?

Have a look at this link. It covers the "crest thing". www.worldhorsewelfare.org/information/right_weight_adviceHorses that are the right weight but still have a crest can have a metabolic issue. You see it quite a lot in horses with Cushings and horses who are insulin resistant. A crest is generally not a good sign, particularly if it is solid.

Great pics imo. Yes no one wants a horse to be 0 1nd 1 but I'm afraid to say that my Toby is somewhere down there atm. Many people would say i should have him pts just from looking at him... I think most of mine are in the 3-4 bracket. I'm working to get them all down except Toby of course.

I would say the main difference between 2 and 3 is that the horse in 2 looks like they have just come out of winter after a couple of months off. 3 looks like he is worked on a regular basis, has access to grass and a nice summer coat, nothing much more than that.

I would choose a different picture for number 2. The horse looks old, pot bellied, slightly dipped in the back, and laminitic - but the description says ideal for a fit horse, so I'd use a picture of a fit horse!
