BERGAMOT
Nature’s valium – stress-buster in a bottle, this lovely green oil is extracted from the rind of the fruit of Citrus Bergamia which is like a small orange.
Bergamot is very helpful for conditions which are exacerbated by stress as it is uplifting and stress relieving as well as having a direct physical effect on such conditions as psoriasis, cold sores, digestive upsets and cystitis, all of which can occur or be worsened if the sufferer is stressed.
Known as an anti-depressant Bergamot has been used successfully to help combat the ‘Winter Blues’, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Mixed with another citrus oil such as grapefruit or orange it makes a pleasant aroma to go into a room burner or bath soak and so is an easy way to treat this condition.
Bergamot is a ‘photosensitiser’ which means it increases the skin’s reaction to sunlight and makes sunburn more likely. In the ‘60s &’70s there was a popular sun tan oil called ‘Bergasol’ which used this property of Bergamot oil to aid tanning – we weren’t worried about skin cancer back then! Therefore care should be taken when applying Bergamot to the skin, especially in the summer or for those with skin that burns easily. The photosensitising effect can last several days.
