My Work - Feemac
Module 1
1: What is a Essential Oil?
An Essential oil is a concentrated form of the plants complex cocktail of chemicals.
2: Who was Rene Gattefosse and what did he do that is significant in modern aromatherapy?
Rene Gattefosse was a french chemist. Who began his research into the healing powers of essential oils, after burning his hand and immerging it in lavender oil he was impressed how quickly it healed.
In 1937 he wrote a book about the effects of essential oilsand he coined the phase 'Aromatherapy'. He went on to set up a business producing oils for the use in fragrance and cosmetics.
3. Steam Distillation where large quantities of the plant are placed in a vat and steam is forced through the bottom. The steam then passes through a condenser and the resulting liquid drains into he collection vat the 'essence' forms a layer on top of the water (the water can be used several times) and the resulting water is called Hydrosol which is also called flower water such as Rose Water.
4. I would consider the following - the quality of the essential oils on offer, the method of extraction, are they blended oils or are they 100% pure essential oils, where the oils are from warmer countries as the growing conditions of the plants i.e not warm enough in the UK to produce a good therapeutic oil.

A) Cold - Steam Inhalation, Gargle and Room Burner

Why aroma has an effect on our emotion?
Because our olfactory organ at the back of the nose which detects smell is directly linked to the limbic system of the brain which is where the pituitary gland & hypothalamus are situated together they are responsible for emotions and the release of hormones into the blood. This is why aromatherapy can change your mood.
How would you use essential oils to help baby/young child to get to sleep? What oils would you use?
I would use Roman Chamomile and Lavender in a baby before bed. Use 1 drop in the bath for babies or 2 drops diluted in 10ml of carrier oil and use 2-3mls for small babies. 2 drops for big toddlers.

These answers are all correct, but in practical terms you could do things a bit more simply. 1 - just tea tree on a handkerchief and sniff it regularly. 2 all those oils are good for the reasons you have stated but, as I'll explain when we do mixing and blending soon, its best just to use 2 or 3 oils at a time. Lavender and Marjoram is always a good standby. 3 fine - oils in a room burner. 4 you can put a drop of lavender neat on your finger and rub onto the temples and back of the neck. So long as you only use a drop it will not need diluting. 5 absolutely right. If you want a nicer smell add lavender or Lemongrass or citronella. 6 actually lavender neat on the itch is best although chamomile would work. However chamomile is about 4 times as expensive to buy! 7 8 & 9 all quite right

Module 4
Room Perfume
Frankincence - Fresh woody, fruity and spicy - Base Note Lavender - Floral and woody - Middle Note Lemongrasse - Fresh lemony and earthy - Top Note
2 different blends for Eczema/dermatitis
Blend 1.
Frankincence - Fresh woody, fruity and spicy - Base Note - I would use because it has Vulnerary properties. Lavender - Floral and woody - Middle Note - I would use because it has Anti inflamatory, vulnerary and analgesic properties. It also supports the Immune system. Tea Tree - High intensity, pungent and sanitary - Top Note. I would use because it has a antibotic and bactericide properties. It also supports the Immune system.
Blend 2.
Roman chamomile - Sweet, apple-like fragrance - I would use because for its Soothing, Analgesic, Emollient, Anti Inflammatory and Vulnerary properties. It should be avoided during pregnancy. In some people it may cause dermatitis. Geranium - Floral, fresh, sweet, with a fruity note - Middle Note - I would use because it has Analgesic properties. Use caution to avoid dermatitis in hypersensitive persons. Avoid during pregnancy. Eucalyptus - It is sharp, refreshing and high intensity - Top Note - I would use it because for its Analgesic Properties. It also supports the Immune system.
The 2nd Blend is not suitable for people with Epilepsy or Diabetes, nor during pregnancy.
Another common Illness/condition would be Stress
I would use
Lavender - Floral and woody - Middle Note - to lower blood pressure, help with sleep, sedative and anti depressant properties. Ylang Ylang - Fresh, floral, sweet, slightly fruity, fragrant yet delicate - Middle/Base Note - because it can help with Anxiety, depression, hypertension, palpitations, stress. Majoram - Warm, penetrating and peppery, low intensity - Middle Note - Sedative, vasodilator(dilates veins and arteries) to lower blood pressure. To be used sparingly and not long term.

I tried the room fragrance and like the smell it gave off and found the middle and base notes lingered for a good couple of days after. As yet I haven't had chance to try the others.
Sorry I took so long I've been on some IH courses and thought I might have had chance to do some whilst away but the kept us busy!!

Hi Feemac, glad you have returned to the fold, so to speak. Everyone else seems to have chickened out.... maybe summer & horses have got in the way. I think this is the best bit - when you can get some hands on experience. Because no-one seemed to be bothering I have done no more, but I will now.

I have tried blend 1 for eczema its makes your skin really soft and smooth really good for horsey hands. I have blended a massage oil for stress with Ylang Ylang, Lavender and Marjoram but it will also be good for relaxing muscles I'll try it on friday as I'm judging and riding approx 60 horses so I may need it!
I'm really enjoying the room fragrance! Very relaxing.
