Image of Melaleuca alternifolia: www.veriditasbotanicals.com/img/oils_teatree5.jpgTea tree oil is extracted from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree using steam distillation from the leaves and twigs. Like the Eucalyptus, this tree is native to Australia. The oil has strong antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal properties and is a powerful immune system stimulant. It is indicated for the following physical conditions: Antibiotic Acne Candida Mouth ulcers Thrush Verrucae There are no contraindications. It should be used highly diluted with children under 12.

This is one useful oil! Probably known mostly for its antiseptic and antibacterial uses it has been used for many, many years in its native Australia. The indigenous people would apply the leaves directly onto wounds, make infusions for sore throats as well as inhaling the oil form the crushed leaves to soothe the symptoms of coughs and colds. It is used as an effective form of flea control on dogs, horses and sheep but use on cats is to be avoided as (when licked off the fur) can prove fatal! In my overview, I see tea tree as an antiseptic primarily.

How much did you put in the burner? You're not supposed to drink it LOL! Did you burn it alone or with other oils? It can be better if you put lavender or a citrus oil with it in a burner.

I put about 3 drops of TT with 3 drops of Eucalyptus, wanted to burn off any germs around as Darcy has a cold poor love. Actually smelt like a cat had peed in the house - don't own a cat btw!

Strong stuff. Maybe TT & lavender would be just as effective, milder and not smell so bad. And especially if Darcy is the baby/ toddler I'd stick to that combination. Don't forget, all essential oils are antiseptic to some extent and lavender is quite strongly antiseptic but with a mild action whereas TT can be harsh. Use TT if you want to avoid Pig Flu (Or should it be flying pigs??)

I recently used tea tree on two huge cleg bites and they immediately started reducing in size. I also use tea tree on piercings to cleanse. I combine a little Tea Tree and Lavender in a bottle of water (i know it doesn't disolve in the water) and use on my kitchen surfaces. Actually I use it on most surfaces in the house. Also as an air freshener.
I used a drop on my toothbrush last night (for general oral health) and my tongue went numb...!

I used a drop on my toothbrush last night (for general oral health) and my tongue went numb...! Yes, that can happen... hopefully it didn't last long. The trick is to get a small drop. Sometimes it can come out a bit fast.

I used it years ago on a 5 month old foal that had 36 stitches and 2 chest drains in it the foal pulled all the stitches out not to mention the 2 chest drains the vet said he couldn't restitch it and to wash it out daily with distilled water and I added a couple of drops of tea tree and it really cleaned it up well I think the vet was impressed at how it turned out! I wish I had known about the Lavender mixed in to help the healing process at the time!

I just got some tea tree oil to add to a recipe for fly repellant. I have got loads of insect bites and have put a drop on some of them neat and so far so good the itching is better. I have been putting aloe vera on for days without a lot of success. (usually works so I wonder if some of my bites are a heat itch?). I hope the fly repellant works on the ponies. J
