Hi jen, i have a pagony rug. I used to be a devout boetter, had three or four until they changed the material, my lad literally shredded it in a day. Which considering we have electric fencing and only a field shelter to rub on, was pretty rubbish. I know a rug cant stand up to too much rubbing, but i expect a sweetitch rug to withstand a bit. i am sure they had changed the material, to the last one i had and it wasnt as strong so i actually couldnt afford another boett straight off and got a pagony. Its alright, the clips arent as good quality as the boett, and im not sure iv got quite the right size for my lad it has come up a bit big, but overall for a fraction of the cost of the boett im pleased! i think i got some info with mine...perhaps give them a call incase they missed it out? it is def. breathable but not waterproof. mine isnt anyway but its so thin a its ok in a light summer shower as it dried out quickly anyways.

the fans would be brilliant, if i had my own stables with leccy and stuff that would be my first port of call. in at dawn and dusk when the midgets are at there worst.
i made a 'curtain' for my boys door last year which helped to keep the midges out too...

We've got a Boett for one of ours and its been fantastic. It is breatheable but not waterproof, but it dries quickly and the horse is out in it all the time in summer. This year I've bought two Solva Icelandic rugs as I've now got a second one with sweetitch. The material looks to be the same as the Boett I've got but they specifically say it is the same as the old Boett material, rather than the new Boett material, so I think you are right Hannah, Boett have changed the material.
I got some information with the Solva rugs and I think they are the same people that sell the Pagony so I'd definitely give them a ring and ask if they've left it out by mistake.

I got a Pagony for Maggie, it wasn't as generous size wise as the boett, and didn't last well. I thought afterwards it was false economy - if it's a bit tight around the shoulders etc that is bad news when they have to wear it 24/7 for months and months. Caspar has the Derby House fly rugs, they seem perfectly adequate for him, with electric fencing. They have a double lined tail flap and mane strip, a neck cover with ear holes and a belly flap - come with a mask but I gaven't used one as yet. A lot easier to get on and off than a boett type thingy as well. I also keep both of them on a starvation paddock and feed soaked hay throughout the summer - they are both greedy fatties given half a chance, and having a lot of grass seems to make them worse. When Maggie got through the fence at the Open Day last year and I had to leave her to graze a big field for a few hours, she was really really itchy the next day.

he isnt 2 yet and he is in a 6ft 3 rug, ordered him a 6ft 6, as i thought about the long wear of them, and he might, i hope not have another growing spurt, so is there food to avoid then?

I have a pagony. It's now three years old, but to be fair I haven't used it on a SI pony or horse who could reach something to rub on. It's very midgety here and it acts as a super fly rug. Mine was used every day for eight months of the year and is perfect. The rug will repel the rain, but is not waterproof. There's no need as they dry out quickly. They are safe to use 24/7 and wash like a dream (don't use the dryer!). The long piece that comes down through the neck piece clips onto those two clips between the front legs, otherwise it's just a matter of putting over the head and doing up. I think they are fabulous but NOT a dedicated SI rug as far as I know.

I've used them Jen, I bought 3 of them, one for myself, for my friend and for my colleague.
They aren't made to measure like Boetts are, but certianly are more affordable. I think they come up a bit small on the chest for mine, or not deep enough on the belly cover surcingles to go round
But they do the job. I did find the leg straps were a bit too tight on my mare and had to get some fleece strap covers to stop the insides of her hind legs getting rubbed. It fits each horse differently,
I do worry about the belly strap surcingles putting pressure on back constantly, I've always tried to vary pressure points. I'd prefer a bit fat velcro all along sides to attach a belly strap to (think I've got a few ideas now !!)

I've just ordered one Jen, I bought it via Ebay and they did have quite a lot of info on there. Here's the blurb:
These rugs are breatheable and lightweight, designed to be worn constantly during the midge season, in rain or shine. They are water resistant, machine washable at 30 degrees, and very quick drying. They are hard-wearing but like any rug, don't mix well with barbed wire or very playful fieldmates! They are easy to mend and come in a cloth bag and with spare material which can be used for patching if necessary. It's best to fit the rug before your horse starts itching - ie, before the midges appear, but a blanket will really help a horse which is already itchy.
