I am so confused as to the legal and safe requirements for towing. have seen a 2.5 jeep cherokee that we like and have found out the kerb weight at 85% is 1827
So do i find the weight of trailer and add the weight of horses?
have seen trailers for under 902kg and my two horses cob 15h is just 497kg pony is 397kg only weighed with tape
so this adds to about 1800kg so would it be ok.
sorry to be so dim but it is confusing stuff

I'm no expert but this might be of use to you www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/inf30.pdfI think that means that the MAM weight of car + MAM weight of Trailer needs to be under 3500kg if you passed your test after 1997 if before you have no such restrictiong just car MAM must be greater than trailer MAM.

Gixer - I think the information you've given relates to licences and what you can tow. hdonna - your question is about safety??? As far as I understand it, the limits are not set by law, but common sense and safety dictate the 85% rule. (If the outfit you're towing is heavier than the tow vehicle, you could end up with a big problem when going downhill!). Have a look at the following leaflet from the Caravan Club - it refers to vehicle weights, applicable to other towed vehicles as well as caravans. www.caravanclub.co.uk/NR/rdonlyres/801876BF-A519-46FF-BC4F-F2DF284BD52C/0/YourTopTwentyQuestions.pdf

As I read it the towing vehicle's maximum authorised mass MUST exceed the weight of what is being towed by law. with the weights question I though this was what was being asked.

www.cuddles.abelgratis.netThats my understanding of the towing rules and recommendations too. The 85% rule is NOT a legal requirement just recommended as a safety margin, I'm a caravanner and know a few people who tow upto the kerbweight of their vehicle.

You can always load the extras into the car - helps with the weight. The calculations look OK to me, but I must be honest and say I'm not an expert!!
