Get out.. this place isnt not looking after your horse and certainly you are not being treated as a customer
That is unreal and unacceptable but not unusual.. sadly.,..

I am greatly comcerned about your horse not getting enough hay/haylage. To be blunt YOU need to supplement the yard hay by buying in some extra for him as a short term measure until you can reslove this problem. Horses MUST trickle feed for the majority of the day and it is unacceptable for him to go without food for such a long time.

maybe if YOU fed him morning and night then at least you'd know he had enough food, as part livery it seems as if youre yard already do alot for you but each horse is different and needs to be fed accordingly.

BA - I DO feed him extra by buying hay and supplementing his intake. I DO take responsiblity for my own horse.
Milo - unfortunately, we are not allowed to feed our own horses, but when I am at the yard at feedtime, I ALWAYS check the level of food in his bucket and if it doesn't seem enough, I will say something.
It would be great to have him on DIY so that I can do all the feeding myself - but it's just not possible to do so.
I waited 34 years to get my own horse, and believe me his welfare is my top priority.

The yard doesn't feed ad lib, but I top him up. The issue I had was that his extra hay wasn't being given when I was not there to give it.
The yard has over 30 horses on it, and I can understand why the YO wouldn't want people to have free access to the feedroom - there is enough pilfering of stuff as it is - it has not been unknown for unopened bags of feed to disappear. We have even had large bales of haylage go walkabouts.
The yard does have its plus points, and generally everything trots along OK - it's just over the last two weeks, these three issues have arisen. I was hoping to get some support from you guys, but seem to have been chastised for not caring for my horse properly.

Maxicob, they're taking the proverbial... find a new place Honey!
easier said than done i know, but if you're not happy with the way your neddie is being kept (and I wouldn't be in your situation, they are cutting corners at his expense), you'll be miserable in the long run and always worrying. That takes all the fun out of horse ownership, and it isn't fair of them to do that to you.
You might find that assisted DIY or part livery elsewhere (maybe even a private yard with a space who'd love a bit of extra income?) would be able to provide a better standard of care for your money. Even if you paid the yard for DIY / assisted and paid someone else a bit extra to do yours when you couldn't be there?
The yard where mine are is technically DIY, but there's a couple of ladies who do bits and pieces for people in return for a small fee, right up to pretty much full livery! means we all rub along very well together and nobody is ever stuck for help for holidays or whatever.
Good luck treasure!

Hey just noticed where you are! I grew up in Sunninghil (near Ascot) !!! Is that riding school still opposite the Blacknest Gate of Windsor Great Park? that was a lovely yard (though I am talking 15 years ago now!). The one on the other end of the park was nice too (Bishop's Gate entrance - can't remember the name of the yard). I used to work at Ribblesdale Park - beautiful yard and horses looked after like royalty but seriously expensive, that's near the Ascot Gate entrance. are you spotting a Windsor Great Park theme here It's still one of my very favourite places! There's a whole pile of yards round the Winkfield area too... is that too far away?

The yard is not doing what you pay them for Maxicob, and that is not fair on your horse or you. I hope you find a solution to the problem. You wouldnt be having a rant if you didnt care hun

Hi Cobalmighty - Blacknest Gate is now a livery yard - it used to be run by Michelle Bone, but she broke her leg in about 20 places and had to give it up. Now run by someone who used to be at our Yard. I did look at the Bishop's Gate one, but the turnout is very limited. Ribblesdale is now sold and has probably been pulled down to make way for "Executive housing", but I heard it was lovely. I keep him in Old Windsor, so we still have easy access to the Great Park.
Winkfield is fine, it's just finding somewhere that can take him - all the good yards are full and have waiting lists about a foot long! Plus, as you will know, a lot of the land is clay around Windsor area so all year turnout is always a problem.

Why not check out private farms often they dont go on any list and you never know what you might find.
Of the many yards I have been in over the years ofteh you do wonder who is the important one, the horse or the YO.. why do they take on this business of the horse welfare isnt the most important issue.
Often they do not seem to have an understanding of horses and how they should be fed..ie. trickle grazers and need lots of hay to keep them satistfied..
Gosh when you see Junes horses and her liveries. they get loads of hay.. something she will never cut back on. But experience has shown me she is the unusual then then norm sadly

Point out to YO, that in running this business she is providing a service, which she isnt doing correctly for the welfare of your (and others) horse's.... and that if she continues to cut things, then you will cut the livery to compensate..... either that or move.. feel for you..
We had Seamus on full livery for a month a couple years ago, and they didnt damp his feed, after they were asked too.... they were giving it dry.. none of the grooms knew to do it, even though some of the others got it dampened.. They also said he was a box walker... I pointed out he only did this was when he was hungry
