Thanks Heather, lovely comments. He has his back checked Spring and Autumn and yes hes fine in that department. Hope he still is at 28! Is yours still dun? Alex is going greyer by the day and I would guarantee that at 28 he will be white. I cant imagine lateral work can be bad for horses unless done really badly as after only a few simple sessions ponies become softer and start to work with, rather than against the rider. Soft muscles are much less likely to be damaged than tense ones so it makes sense.

I have only just seen this thread, following on from my own on general regarding physio visit to my mare.
She has become very grumpy on the lunge, frequently snaking in at me, not wanting to go out and bucking every now and then.
The physio has said she def has some soreness in her back and asked what I have been doing with her. I replied I had been doing some parelli work on the instruction of a supposedly knowledgeable friend. The physio immediately said aah that will be the cause then as parelli get a horse to stop by disengaging the hind quarters. She sees this quite a lot and 9 times out of 10 the owner has been doing disengagement.
Its therefore not down to ridden work alone and should only be done in an emergency or when the horse has been taught to carry the rider and itself correctly.
