I had the same situation a few years ago.
A friend asked if I wanted a little 12 yr old chestnut mare (free) (She is 12.2hh )as the owner was cutting down.
The mare is a Newforester and she has papers so it is better, but she was unhandled (Wild) At the time she would come in to the stable for food but if you went to touch her she was so frightened and in the field you could not get near her.
They had bought her because they wanted the foal that was on her at the time, she was in foal again and the foal I saw her with was the product of their colt (He got to her they did not intend to bred).
She was driven into the stable and then into my trailer, that was 6 years ago.
It took me a long time to get her to be friendly but finally we can catch her in the field(If she wants to be caught) she now has her feet trimmed etc
At the age of 18 she is living a lovely life. She is a companion to one of my Arabs that does not like living in. I may put her in foal one more time to my Arab stallion.I think Arab / forest x will be nice.
Before I had her and she had been bought my the other people she may have been broken as I can put a saddle on her in the stable and mount her,but really her history is unknown to me.
She still remains aloof and sometimes quite frightened. She will never go anywhere she will remain with me for the rest of her life.

I was given a little pony for my grandaughter It is the most expensive and time consuming pony on the yard as it suffers from chronic laminitis, blind and is hat rack thin. she costs more to feed than all the others put together. I am glad I took her on as her only other option was a riding school. She is sound just now she is galloping freely round the 6 acre field with the others and is happy to be in the herd. Give it a few months and she will be miserable again cooped in either a small pen or a stable for the summer on her own. I hate this part of her life but without it she is crippled. She cannot wear a muzzle as she rubs it against her leg making her eye swell and superrate she even does it with a headcollar so If anything short of a bullet will help her I am open to suggestions.
