Just out of curiosity really.. I've always been interested in learning to drive (horses ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ) and wondered how one went about it? I think Connor would make a fab driving pony and I'd love to break him to drive - assuming I could drive, what start up cost would I be looking at? Just a bit of a dream really, I doubt I have the time or moeny at the moment but Connor's young and maybe one day when we're both older he could have a bit of a career change!

Where abouts are you? I would recommend going to a qualified instructor and having a trial lesson. Driving is an odd thing... you either love it or you hate it (bit like marmite ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ). This is what I do... ![](http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e96/bertie157/bertindoors.jpg) Indoor Driving Trials ![](http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e96/bertie157/boobs1.jpg) Private Driving ![](http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e96/bertie157/BertDrive.jpg) Happy Hacking Driving ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Drivings brill, i drive the kids 12hh, as she doesn't get enough exercise other wise. A cheap exercise cart can cost between £60 - £200. I bought mine off EBAY, but the auctions sometimes have them. Personally i prefer driving in a collar but we have alot of hills and they do find it easyer to pull in a collar. Collars are like riding saddles they must fit properly or they can rub or choke your pony. Zilco harness is good and can be bought cheaply at tack sales, even Robinsons sell it. Driving is like long reining sat down. Find someone that could maybe let you have a go and there are regional driving clubs that could help. we break all our horses to harness and its mainly about using common sense. After long reining with a driving bridle on( some horses find these difficult at first, we tend to leave blinkers attached to a headcollar on in a stable for ahour each day* no bit* until they are happy with them) we start desensitising them to a noise behind with a wheelbarrow with some stones in. !st we push the barrow infont of the horse so she can get a good look, then push the barrow behind while long reinning. The horse can get used to the sound of wheels and rattles that a cart would make. When we put the cart on for the first time we have 4 people. 1 at the horses head 1 next to the tugs and 2 at the back of tha cart. We put the cart into the tugs and do not fasten it in, as we walk forward the people behind PUSh the cart. IF the pony panicks the pony can be guided staight forward, while the cart is pulled backwardsand the person by the tugs can catch the shafts. It is also helpful to push the shafts for the horse when teaching him to turn. GOOD Luck ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I started driving in January last year, as I bought a mare from the sales, ans she had obviously been driven, though never said that. I got some friends to help me longline her, and show me, I then carried on myself. In August last year, I bought this 2 wheeled cart, just because it was low down, and could get off easily incase of any problems, it is a bit small for her really, and looking to buy the black one for her a 4 wheeler, she goes great in it. She is a wonderfull mare to drive, and tolerated me. She knows what she is doing, and is so relaxed in the heaviest of traffic. Hubby and I drive her, I am now selling her 2 wheeled cart. i6.photobucket.com/albums/y237/sandy_smith/newcamerapics028.jpgIt is great fun, I love harnessing up, and we go on pub rides, and picnics, and she stands still for ages until we are ready to go. hoping to buy this one off my instructor. i6.photobucket.com/albums/y237/sandy_smith/newcamerapics051.jpgthis is a closer view of it. i6.photobucket.com/albums/y237/sandy_smith/newcamerapics055.jpg

If you can long rein you can do a lot of the training yourself - you will need help with the last stages. You can get weekend 'learn to drive' c ourses - which I think cost around the £200 mark - and as stated harness costs aobut £300 and cart varying prices. I have leather harness and Libby's harness, which is super, really super, and made to measure is very inexpensive from them.
The cart must fit, really fit, and if you are not skilled, get your driving instructor to show you how to know, and how to measure, and doub le check. This is all important.
If you can long rein, get in as much practise as you possibly can long reining round the streets/lanes/roads. Make sure your horse is meeting everything, and still going forward. This is a lesson best learned gradually and over time, and often repeated.
Then your instructor will have half thier owrk donw and only need to teach your neddy to accept pulling a weight, and being between shafts, and being put to a cart.

Tis great to drive and lovely for the ponies to have another bow to their arrow, both of mine drive and were actually driving before they were backed to ride. My friend competes scurry at the top levels with her welshies and tis great fun. She also teams 4 for dressage and they love it!

My instructor has just bought a pair of driving freisians from Holland, so looking forward to helping her with them, and she is going to teach me how to drive pairs to. Pip I am looking forward to doing these social drives this year.

I love driving and am looking for a new cart myself. Bertie, is that a Bennington Fun Bug in one of your pics? I am thinking about one of those even though it is a bit pricey. I just want to do some fun driving out on dirt roads, etc and have no plans to show so want something comfy for both me and Reba.

Hi Marty! The yellow & blue vehicle is one that my O/H (on the backstep in it) designed for me especially for doing Indoor Driving Trials. The bottom picture is Bertie in my Fenix F2000 (it's my 'once in a lifetime' vehicle that I blew a ten years saving plan on ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ). Personally for me, there is no other carriage that can compare to the superior quality of Mark Broadbents 'Fenix' carriages. www.fenixcarriages.co.uk/homepage.htmtara x ETA: This is Mark himself driving my vehicle! ![](http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e96/bertie157/Markbroadbent.jpg)
