As im thinking of breeding from my mare, im thinking about AI aswell. Now this will be my first foal, ive worked with foals and youngsters before, but this will be the first of my own. What actually happens with AI? I seem to have a couple of them around here (maybe the same place that has come up on 2 websites tho ) can anyone walk me through it?

choose stally and a good vet do your homewrok on ai vets , this is the secrest to the succsess, 2, swob mare, 3 scan mare for when she wil be more receptive, if you really lucky you might just be able to catch her just before, so start taking a note of her seasons, you might have to jab her in season so you can judge it better of the day that she will be inseminated, if you can have your seman shipped mid week, both times i have ai;d and didnt try and work it out for her to come into season, or ready on the wednesday, trust me it make things so much better, if you have to have the seman posted, a courior on a week end could cost a bomb, im taking it she will stay at home/? pm me if you have any questions as i feel like im rambling, lol

What actually happens with AI? I seem to have a couple of them around here (maybe the same place that has come up on 2 websites tho ) can anyone walk me through it? I see you're in Shropshire so I would HIGHLY recommend that - once you've chosen the stallion you want to use, talk to Tullis or Edward Matson at Twemlows. Doing AI at home can be very expensive, due to constant call-outs for scanning (assuming your vet is equipped and competent to do reproductive scans and AI.) Send your mare to Twemlows and let them do it all. It's not CHEAP - but they do a vet package so you KNOW what it's likely to cost you and they have extremely good results! www.stallionai.com/

What sort of mare do you have? And don't worry too much about gloom and doom vet (seems to run in the profession! ) But, of course, they usually only see the disasters. I had 10 mares foal in 2006, 10 live healthy foals, and only had the vet to one which was for a retained placenta, sorted easily enough! Yes, you CAN have a disaster - but if you do everything right and have just an ounce of luck - everything will be fine!

My mare was AIed this year. I'm very lucky that she took first time, but even so, it was a palaver and VERY expensive. I'm also very lucky that my horses live just a short walk from a stud, so I was able to take her there for teasing, so knew exactly when she came into season. Then got the vet out to scan, called the stud, who shipped the semen via fedex or similar, who despite the package being properly addressed, managed to send it to Southend (I live in Hollesley, Suffolk ) So the package turns up the next day, completely useless! So the process was repeated three weeks later! SHe was (obviously) inseminated at home (in the middle of a field, actually!), and the vets were going on about how it'd never work... But I knew my mare. I knew she wouldn't take if she was stressed at some horsey hospital. And I was right. She's now in foal to a lovely homozygous tobiano stallion called TomTom ( www.homozygous-stallion.com/?option=picsandvideo not that I'm bragging or anything ;D) Go with your gut, you know your mare better than the vets do....

Twemlows sound really good - they've been highly recommended to me by lots of people whose judgement I trust - they're supposed to be the best in the country. My stallion is going there soon to be tested, dummy-trained, collected, etc.

thanks janet, he is a bit tasty, lol ;D my mares idxtb (another excuse for a picture of my girl ) I had my vet come rasp teeth today and tell me that my welsh ds teeth may fall out soon because of (cant remeber the name of them now) huge holes beween her teeth that catch food, poor girl, we were told she had a problem with one tooth when we got her, but there all over her mouth ive also been looking at whirlwind horses stud in oswestry, anyone had any experience with them?

He's about 15.2hh and should make 15.3hh when fully grown (he's only 5), I spoke to the paul at the stud and he's a real nice guy, both stallions live out and have super temperments and they both get hacked with mares & geldings, sounds like a good set up.
My mare is a 16.1 TB with the fabbest temperment but crappy feet (but lippy's have good feet so fingers crossed!). She has foaled before (not with me) and the foal had a super temperment too! Am very excited ;D ;D ;D

I believe the ID is Embla George, tho i bought her form a dealer who had no papers for her Im aiming to breed something smaller (Amber is 16hh) and something i can do some endurance and a bit of western on, im looking at sport ponies, connies, arabs, quarter horses and loads of others. im looking at Fiyah Phoenix from whirlwind, but a bit put off by the 'breeds 100% greys' bit, id love another chestnut (got 3 already ;D)
