Last night (about 5.30pm) i drove down the yard though the village and meet some one riding a pony Are they mad or what. It was pitch black no street light. She had lots of high viz and flashing lights (more than my christmas tree) on her but even so. What is it with people I reckon the girl was about 12 years old. Why didn't her parents stop her. Madness

i see no problem with riding in the dark, sometimes in winter it is the only chance people get, i would however have a problem with a 12 yr old riding on her own in the dark or light i wouldn,t let my daughter out on her own

I regularly have to ride in the dark now it's winter..on a mountain, pitch black, windy and very cold lol there's no other time I can ride because I work full time. I'll be riding her at 6pm tonight.
I would never ride on the roads though no matter how much hi viz I had on, think that's what ops getting at. At least she was visible anyway but you never know who's lurking about at night!

I've done it as well. But off road as much as possible and only on terrain that I know with my eyes closed. Pone didn't like the light on my hat to start with but she was fine with it in the end.
If you're doing long ERs (say 160km in a day) you start in the dark and often finish in the dark so got to get myself and pone used to it.

I did it last night with my flashing lights but only had to go down our private lane to the school. Did meet a car but it was my OH and he knew I was likely to be there so backed out for me!

I wouldn't like to ride on the roads in the dark. Motorists simply wouldn't be expecting a horse to be out. I suppose it would be OK on fairly quiet local lanes, but I wouldn't venture onto a B road or a busy cut-through.

I wouldn't dare use any of the country lanes rond by us in the dark - drivers simply don't expect someone to be out on them when it's pitch black and they tend to drive a bit faster as well, assuming they can see lights of other vehicles well in advance. At least this girl was lit up though, unlike the three riders I saw on Boxing Day - dark road, fairly busy, and two dark bay horses (luckily one was grey so I could see them - just - but was almost on top of them before I could make out horse shapes), riders wearing black jackets and riding along totally oblivious to traffic

How do your see the terrain Bh? That's amazing. I don't at all really, it's very dark. I stick to a set route that I and Tia know very well and make sure the pace is always careful and steady esp downhill, I ended up jumping a ditch one night by mistake because I didn't see it though lol. I really trust Tia, she's the sort of horse that you know will look after you , her and the yard dog who joins us!

I wouldn't be worried about terrain, sherb would deal with that, I suppose if there was something horrible been left lying in a field though, that could be dangerous.

Really.... God i wouldn't dare ride in the dark on any road. People don't except to see horses out. It's just not safe (in my area any how).
I know the yard where the girl comes from and they have two flood lit arenas so there wasn't really any need to be out in the dark.

I think that drivers are looking more towards the middle of the road not to the edge where horse riders are also as a driver your eyes adjust to other car lights that slightly dazzle you in the oncoming traffic. If a horse was to spook sideways on most lights would be out of the drivers view.
