thanks guys, I do feel he needs to be out and given his breed there is no particular problem with leaving him out weather wise, although it would be unfortunate for him to go out half way through winter after being in at night. I also know I can't put him out on his own so I need to have a chat with hatty's owner and otherwise consider getting a live out companion, perhaps just on loan. It's definitely not his feed, he doesn't really get any and what he does get was on the advice of jackie taylor, literally bulk and balancer he gets, no hard feed at all, absolutely no grain!!
If I had just left him out at the end of summer he would have a mamoth coat by now but I didn't and he has been rugged so I would need to make sure he was warm enough and same for hatty if she goes with him. I will have a chat with her owner and see what we can arrange. Thanks for all your comments, I think they'll help alot :-)

Hi guys, made some progress, details on "The Sherbinator" on perfect confidence. Merry Christmas :-)
Also spoke with Hatty's owner who suggested we get through January putting out every day and in at night and then if it's a bit warmer in Feb we can start putting out every other night and then progress to out all the time early spring rather than waiting until April. So that's taken some pressure off.
