There is a 4 year old ex racer TB gelding at our yard. And I have to say that he is an absolute pleasure to handle and be around. He is sane, sensible, hacks out on his own, in company, goes hunting, does all sorts. He may be the exception, I don't know - but he is an absolute cracker, and stunning to look at too!

tbs can be more flighty and hyper than other horses because of their breeding. the lady is right but not all of them are like that. if she has never raced thats a good start! tbs can be very gentle and a pleasure to ride. if you keep them calm (bach flower remedies, massage, out in the field as much as possible etc) they will be a pleasure to own and ride. when you go to see her check her personality out, if they are very alert and flighty being handled then they are probably like that being ridden, but ride her and see for yourself if she has been trained well and handled properly then because she is so young she should be ok. about the barefoot issue you really need to check her feet out and ask the current owner what the quality of her feet are like because if they are bad quality then she needs to be shod, but if you dont plan on doing much road work and her feet are strong then go barefoot its deifnatly a more natural option good luck and hope she is the right horse for you xxxx

I hate this categorising of neddies!! tb's are fast and are bred for short distance racing but they are just like any other neddie...... how they are trained and brought up reflects on 'how they behave'!!
tb's do not have very good feet. this is a fact. so best to get a good farrier involved and take advice. barefoot may ( ? ) be okay as long as you aren't planning on endurancing. depends on your plans. x

Sarah Braithwaite trims mine and she would wholeheartedly disagree with the Tb's have bad feet thing, she trims a few Tb's that are barefoot, I have one that is barefoot and one thats going barefoot soon and I sold 2 TB's earlier this that are both barefoot and Anna's Cali (Anna'a a member on here) is a barefoot TB too - They can and will go barefoot with a good trimmer and the right diet. www.performancebarefoot.co.uk/

Well Brian... Is the most laid back, sensible, sweetest horse I have ever met in my life.. and guess what.. hes full TB So yeh Feet wise.. if your willing to put in the hrdwork & money that is involved in taking a horse barefoot then go for it. Hopefully she wont have been shod for too long if shes only 4.

A TB was the best horse i have ever owned. She was the swetest, sanest, easiest, safest horse i have ever sat on, i dont think any horse will come close to being as amazing as i found her. But then the other TB..he was un-explainable he was so insane. I think like with every breed you get the sane and the flighty ones. But they arnt all crazy I think sometimes they just get some bad press.

I never expected to own one but I do. She's a proper princess on the ground, very light on her feet, quiet, sensitive and affectionate, but hates having to share attention. She's very elegant and beautiful. She's delightful to ride, incredibly athletic and has absolutely unbelievable stamina, but she's quick and can also be very strong sometimes which isn't everyone's cup of tea. She's never happier than when she's allowed to go full speed. Very brave though and will absolutely try her heart out for you, but can occaisionally end up in a bit of a state, but this is rare. She's a truly fantastic horse to hack.
She's barefoot but her feet started off from a very poor position and frankly haven't made that much progress in 18 months, boots are still a must for any serious hacking but I have absolutely no regrets about taking that route with her.

Well I must admit I absolutely adore TB's, but then again I would be a bit biased as I own the most wonderful ex-racer ever!!! ;D I've had her for about 5 years and got her almost fresh off the track. It has been such hard work retraining her, but oh my is it worth it in the end. Her paces now send shivers up my spine as we ride in such harmony. We suit each other perfectly, I would be lost without her. My horse is extremely sensitive though, thats perfect for me but in the wrong hands she gets very nervous and as a result people can mistake this for her being flighty. This isn't the case, she's so laid back she's almost horizontal!! But she has been treated badly in the past and doesn't easily forget these things, understandably. As I said it has been such hard work to get her where she is today, and although I wouldn't change things for the world I don't know if i could go through it all again, in my experience TBs need more understanding and time than a lot of other horses, not saying this is true for all of them of course but certainly for those which I have encountered. But for my girl to have such trust in me makes it so worthwhile. Oh p.s.....in case you didn't pick it up, I love my hoss!!! rie xx

I have never owned a TB but have worked with race horses and ridden them and other TB's.
I must say they do get bad press!!
When i was working on a racing yard i obviously rode a fair few horses that were raced. I never went up the gallops as that wasn't my thing personally, but always went out on hacks. Never had any problems with them except for one, but out of how many i got to ride whats one?? Nothing, i certainly didn't put it down to the horses breed!! I must say i even had a favourite race horse called Iron 'N' Gold and if i had the chance to of had him i would have bitten my right arm off, he was such a dude, will never forget that horse.
Good luck hun x x x

Well, having asked this question I would advise you to proceed carefully!
Yes, TBs are beautiful, intelligent, lovely animals, but they can be VERY reactive and quick, you have to be about 10 steps ahead of them at all times, on the ground as well as on board.

i have to agree the most noble creatures on this earth, however im going to play advocate as in devil, if your not a tb person, and i dont mean your personally, there a bit like marmite, lol they can either love you or hate you , imho i would go and try the tb you have in mind watch her carefully and if you feel a bond or somekind of connection id go for it, i really do belive in the tb people thing, some folks just never get on with them, id rather ride a mad tb mare that a daft shire x, ive always felt safe even with some of the scattier ones i used to ride in my youth, says she who is now 50 apparntly,
