I did upto 50 milers with my old boy, but stuck mainly to 40's. he had to be kept super trim through the season, and did upto 50s on a hand full of coarse mix, three handfulls of chaff and a section of hay per day. Very economical to run.
Getting the heart rates down was a problem. I have since discovered that mines never dropped below 44 bpm after a ride due to COPD.
I did get some snippy comments - not from fellow riders who could see him strut his stuff on the rides but from vets and vet writters and the like. Often they didnt get the fact that a welsh switches of at the end of a ride and falls a sleep not through exhasution but through common sense - why waste energy!
As well as the above named welshies there was a couple of very good section C's competing with childern against adults when i rode. they did very well.
