Well I was thinking about the one rein stop, which I hate to admit but I learned through parelli about 9 years ago. I think it is excellent and was reasonably taught, although I would have preferred them to be treating horses more as individuals and training them with a little more thought rather than as automatons. I am not a fan of Parelli but I do think there are lots of good things made failry concise by them....so... What is the most useful thing you have learnt from parelli? ( come on,I know you are out there!lol!)

You can make *loads* of money if you are smart enough to market simple techniques to un-confident people.

I enjoy watching Parelli-well some of it.
I don't like the circus tricks
I don't like the way they use the carrot stick in the same way as a whip, or when they get the horse to yield yet don't let up on the pressure
But most of all, I question any teacher that has so many tools in their toolkit that you would never stop shelling out if money was not an object.
I'd say the main difference between Parelli and IH is that the former teaches students techniques, whereas the latter teaches students to learn

LOL @ Sue.
I'm not afraid to admit that it was Parelli that started me on the whole NH/IH route. The seven games (which incidently are very similar to the ground games given by Kelly in Perfect Manners) gave me some tools as a first time and very nervous horse owner to get to know my new and feisty, norty little horse.
It was the first step down a route that has taken me (so far!) from Kelly and Monty, to Mark Rashid, to Stve Halfpenny and on a journey that has opened my mind and just got me thinking about things from my horse's point of view as much as possible.
And that's no bad thing right?

Confidence to ride without a bit, groundwork. confidence to start our unbroken Arab. To stroke/rub and not to slap. Shame about the people who take it as a disipline, I was at a conference thing and PP said what he did should be done asap to get people on to the stuff they really wanted to do, i.e showjumping, eventing etc. Great marketing machine.

Actually the most useful thing I have learnt from Parelli applies to all areas of life, even dealing with difficult clients and there arsehole OHs at work. In the Level 1 DVDs they explain to you the reason why adults find it difficult to learn, I won't go on about it here but for anyone who has watched them, it's the comfort zone, learning zone stuff. I fully understand it and it is helpful in alot of different things.
For that reason B n B I would disagree wiht your last comment. Parelli definitely teaches students to learn, Linda Parelli's friend who was involved with creating the courses is a professor in adult learning. She was non-horsey and had to complete the courses herself as the first stage of testing and to help her see it from the learner's point of view. They have thought long and hard about teaching and learning rather than just the techniques themselves.
I don't do a lot of parelli but I'm a big fan of it for people who need a structured learning process which I don't think is offered anywhere else in quite the same way (on this particular subject anyway).

i actually have quite a bit of love for bits of parelli and dare i say im actualy looking at taking Dizzy to some demos over summer to get her out and about. i think that used with some horses it is a useful thing to learn, i teach all my horses the 'games' as i thin they teach a lot of the things that are very useful under saddle. and ive found that generally horses that have been taught the games on the floor are more manoverable from ontop. i think its a good thing for less confident of knowledgeable people to get into and they do offer a good network of support.
im not very goodat folowing instructions and being ordered therefore i find it too regimental for me but /... each to there own!

Ok. I've had the level 1 pack and sold it twice, and I'm saving up to buy another Basically because I am isolated ( totally on my own) and novicey and timid and I know it can give me a good basic grounding. I am aware of negative aspects ( I just bought a clipless rope for example to replace my parelli one) Once I feel competant with the basics I know I am free to find other teachings, but for now it's simply laid out for an ignoramous like me. Make it too complicated and deep and I can't follow it It has to be something I can do alone in my field with as much help as possible. Which comes in the way they lay it out for you.

I think you'd better bar me from this thread to.
I'd love to be able to come up with something good about Parelli, but.........

I like that parelli has 90 thousand plus followers that are all trying their best to be better at what they do, anyone who looks to NH/IH methods is looking at what they do and why they do it - that has to be a good thing!

LOL! Thats 2 more banned then!!teehee!!
Seriously,I know there is a lot of bad about parelli, but lets just focus on the good, there is some imo,and we should all be able to take the good from many areas,as long as we can understand what needs avoiding.

Stop attributing your own best qualities to other people. It is a good thing. Everyone who has horses needs to make loads of dosh, it's just we're usually better at spending it. I'm going now.
