I started the horses on Butox when we first came out to France several years ago,it didn't work. Switched to everyone's favourite home-made fly spray but discarded that after a year when there was the citronella scare. Moved onto Emouchine which is messy and tar-like but at least worked a bit better than Butox (though not much).
Now my vet is telling me about a product called Flymax, made by Audevard. I've tried to do a search on the ingredients but there's very limited info. I'll give it a go this week, but just wondered whether anyone here had used it before?

Marianne , we actually use Butox as a replacement for Frontline to deal with ticks and mites . It's fly repellant capability is secondary .
Be interested in Flymax if it works , but for the time being we are continuing our citronelle / lemon mix which is pretty efficient .

Well, almost a week on, just to update you - Flymax is AMAZING! ok doesn't quite go the "11 days without reaaplying" - obviously showering my horses doesn't help! - but it keeps the flies RIGHT off and there are no allergic reactions. Fairly pricey at almost 40 euros/litre (gulp) but definitely worthwhile .......

Our vet is coming out on Wednesday to give Riz his annual tooth check , and to see how our arab mare is recovering from head butting a concrete lintel !!!!!!!!!
I'll ask if he can find us Flymax to try . If it's a once a week application then 40 euros a litre isn't that bad .

I live north of Paris and my horse is at Chantilly. I don't recall seeing this product and I need something good as the flies are pretty bad at the moment. Is it easy to find ?

The ingredients are permethrin and DEET, apparently. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permethrinen.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEETI use DEET based stuff on myself at this time of year as it's the only thing that keep the mozzies off and I get horrid allergic reactions to mozzie bites - basically I have sweet itch... I used something for the neds from the vet called Endure last year and it was quite good, based on permethrins and the same ingredient as Butox, but no DEET in it. But will see if the chemist can get the Flymax in for me as 40 euros a litre is really good. The Endure cost me 50-odd for a biggish bottle.

Our lot have just had their first spray today . Apart from Duc our grey gelding who is always covered in flies , all is well .
According to the blurb on the flask , one application should last 14 days . We shal see .

Well . It seems to be very effective for a week . I think the claim on the flask is a little optimistic .
Main thing though is it is keeping this years mega population of horseflies away .
