OP - This is a fantastic idea for a thread, it's really nice reading about everyones horses. Will do mine when I find some pics.

In chronological order 1. Charisse - the b*tch LOL! she was Mum's first horse after retunring to the saddle when i was about 10. She was a 3 yr old wild child who we travelled HOURS to go and see in a field. she spent half an hour trying to chase mum out the field, ears back, kicking etc., but mum was unfazed and in love. took 3 hours in the pouring rain to get her on the lorry. she was a very one-to-one horse. i was at boarding school so only saw her in the holidays and was sure she hated me! she would always chase me out the field, kick me, take chunks out of me etc etc when i left boarding school at 13, I spent everyday at the yard and Mum began letting me ride her. WHAT a mare!! she began to trust me and we never looked back. She took me PC, hunting, XC, whizzed round SJ courses, dressage, fun rides etc., She had a rough 2 years on loan but is now in a WONDERFUL loan home joining me on endurance rides, jumping 4 foot XC fences!!!! and is spoilt rotten as she should always have been. she always gave me 110%. I thought I couldn't love her any more than I did. Until the day she gave me Zac xxxxxx charisse and mum my first ever xc competition with 3 day old zac behind her! 2. Max - my first pony. 13.2hh new forest grey gelding i rode at the local army school. no one would ride him cos he bucked so much but i loved him however, because i was at boarding school, he wasn't making enough money so they were sending him to the meatman. I was in floods of tears at school. Came home on my 12th birthday to find him looking SOOO much better and waiting for me! Mum had gone up the yard the day before the meatman was due and bought him for £80. Got him home, sorted his sunburn, lice, mane, feet etc., He was the first love of my life. The most blood, sweat and tears I have ever put into a pony but by god did he teach me sooo much! We went on to show at county level, do PC and we went to the army opening meet in 2000 with 2 fingers firmly stuck in the air ;D ;D He went on loan for 2 years as I outgrew him, the family bought him and all 4 kids still ride him now, he is 18 this year my 12th birthday, I just saw him and hadnt even realised who it was!! thought it was a pony mum had bought, he just looked in so much better health! i burst into tears when mum said 'toni.. who is it? its max!' our first show - clear round and 3rd M&M ridden out of 20 entries! 3. 10th May 2001 sleeping in a caravan revising for my SATs exams by torchlight when charisse decides to give birth and into the world came the main man in my life - Zac (Ishcol Chardyll) He needs no introduction, you all KNOW how much I love him and how special he is to me. He turned 6 last week and I wouldnt be without him, not for ANYTHING. 3 days old meeting adam goodfellow! as a 2yr old first endurance ride Me and My Boy 4. Polly and Sandy. Two Welsh Sec A fillies bought at Brecon Market whilst supporting EMW (mum took the trailer - stupid mistake!) Polly was bought in the auction ring as we bidded against the meatman. We think she was about 6months old. Sandy was crammed in a pen full of other foals waiting to be loaded into the meat lorry. She was the only one not struggling. The only one who looked defeated by human 'nature'. The one who looked lost. We bought her from the meatman (Tucker) for 20 guineas. He picked her up by her head and tail and dumped her in our pen with Polly. We brought them home and I spent weeks sitting int he stable. They eventually learnt how to eat milk pellets. Sandy was about 4 months old. Polly was the outgoing show off and Sandy the more timid of the two. They kept Zac company, playing in the field and came for walks round the village. They taught me about trust, respect and the value of perserverance. They are on loan to a family with a disabled child who sees to them everyday as his pet ponies 5. Bear (West Paces) I moved into a point to point yard whilst at college with Zac. Bear arrived as an unsuccessful waste of space from a top trainer. He was a 17.2hh dark bay gelding with the softest most worried expression in the world. He stole my heart. He was headshy and afraid of men. We seemed to 'click' and he soon became my horse to ride as I could ahppily ride him at 5am before college alone round the downs but everyone else said he was too spooky and worrying. He went on to win his first point to point, then his second. Then his third. The raced hunter chase at wincanton and gave Red Brook Lad a good race to the finished, coming 2nd by a head. He is the one I had to leave behind. The one that got away. The one that my heart still aches for Im sorry to go on and all the pics! Its so hard to stop when i get going To all the horses that have touched my life xxxxxx

Tell me about it amelia, I've just started blubbing again reading about Toni's 5! This thread has brought back wonderful memories for me and made me remember just how lucky I am to still spend all my spare time with horses just as I did when I was a kid and just as I will until I'm grey and old I hope!

what a lovely thread! ok here are my five... in no particular order 1. Deej. Deej is a 13.2hh palomino welsh x arab gelding. he is my angel. I love him so much and I cannot imagine life without him. I've had him for a year and a half and known him for longer, he used to belong to friends, I just loved him then. I first rode him after I'd been riding for about 3 months, our first ever trot, he bucked me off three strides in. I wasn't ready to ride him then, but I did! sitting on the ground watching him canter off, just got me hooked on him! I feel off him so many times, hitting the dirt again and again, but he taught me so much. he taught me to jump, to canter, to stay on! I rode him bareback, stirrupless, and everything. When my mum bought him for me was the happiest day of my life. He's bucked me off lots, I have a scar on my eyebrown where I landed on something (Don't know what!) and had to have 5 stitches and 5 local anasetics! we've had ups and downs, I haven't been able to ride him for ages, people, professionals, have told me that he'll kill me, that I should sell him and get a 'nice' pony and much more. but I never gave up on Deej, and he is the most special thing in my life. From the summer of 2006 - I'd been riding about 7 months here, and I'd been riding Deej reguarly for about 2 months. he wasn't mine then. and more recently - what a mud ball! 2. Polly Polly was the horse I learnt to ride on. or rather, pony! Polly was a 9.1hh Grey Shetland mare. I started riding her with my friend who owned her at the time when I was twelve. we rode her all the time, as well as having ordinary riding lessons, bareback, in just a headcollar with a lead rein tied around it. she taught me to gallop, jump, hold on and stay on when the pony suddenly swerves to one side (she did that a lot!) I used to run to the car when my mum picked me up saying "I only fell off twice today!!" I loved riding that little pony, and I miss her a lot. I will always remember her. (sorry, no pic on comp!) Trigger. Trigger is a 12.3hh seven year old exmoor pony. he was a pony at the riding school I went too. I asked the instructor if I could ride him after I'd been there about 6 months. She warned me about him, he was only used on the lead rein because with a rider and no lead rein he would occasionally buck, gallop off, drop his head when you weren't expecting it etc. his fave trick was to burst into gallop, then stop suddenly, drop his shoulder and spin away. he dumped many people in ditches doing this! I wanted to ride him though, so I did! I nearly came off in that first lesson, he put his head down suddenly. but I didn't, and I started riding him reguarly. Soon my friend and I were the only ones who would (and could) ride him without falling off. I loved that little nutter. and although I fell off him twice (once when he suddenly galloped and leapt through the air, bucking as he came down. and once when another pony kicked at him, but got me on the ankle instead, it scared him and he ran off - nearly having me off the back - and then bucked - sending me forward to his ears. then he stood still and I flopped off.) I loved him and still do!! 4. George George was another riding school horse I used to ride. He was a 16.1hh 13 year old bay thoroughbred gelding with a roman nose! He was amazing. I loved him! he has a brilliant stride, long long legs, and such a gentle nature for a tb! I rode him loads, and he was "my" horse when we had a sleepover weekend! he was an ex showjumper and could jump four foot, but I never jumped him that high. I did a diddy clear round course on him, about a foot high! I have a blue rosette that says clear round on for that. I always think of george when i see it. George started behaving badly at one point , he would monkey dance when asked to canter. monkey dancing is hop skip and bucking, being generally silly. It was hilarious because the first time my friend Ellen had a ride at that riding school, she was in the same lesson as me and I was riding george. just before I started cantering, i said to her "now you'll see what a lovely canter george has", kicked him on, and he monkey danced! loony. I actually was quite proud of myself for riding him forwards and getting him to stop! he didn't do it again with me!! ;D George was sold not long after I left that riding school. I don't know where he is, but I think I'll see him again. I really really love him! 5. Ebony Ebony is a 15.3 black seven year old shire x warmblood mare. I've had her for one year and one month and two weeks! When I got ebony, I was pretty depressed because I hadn't ridden much over the winter, i couldn't ride Deej then, and I was generally down. Ebony took that away! she was mental when we first got her, and she cost more than she was worth, but somehow i had to have that moody mare! I didn't like her much after we got her, i prefered to ride Deej instead (who i had just started riding agian) she would buck when i asked her to canter, was disunited, completely control free, had no muscles in the right places and much more. when we moved to another field it got better, we could hack out then, and there was a friend down the road who had a menege. I had lessons, and suddenly we just bonded!! Ebony is my Star horse and I love her. I couldn't imagine life without her. Whenever I feel a bit down, I can just go outside and their in my garden now, I can just get ebony out and go for a ride, I always feel better! she's still a moo in the field, but i just laugh at her. she can jump really well, and we fly over logs in the woods! She is very special to me. April '06 not long after I got her and more recently - sorry about the jeans!! But there are so many other horses that have made an imprint on my life, sally, posie, sparky, mo, chance, boris, cherry, I couldn't say them all!! I've decided those are my top five, but that is so hard to do!!! love reading all the other peoples top fives, they're really nice

This is a wonderful idea of a thread. I'll need to go back and read everyone's stories more thoroughly but wanted to add my 5 first: 1. Aznar. Aznar used to be a race horse who had a lot of tendon problems so was reformed. He was difficult and his owner (a neighbour) let me ride him from time to time but eventually sold him on. 2. Quitelle. Quitelle was my favourite riding school horse. I only felt comfortable riding her. She was 18 and a wonderful school master if only a little "forward". She had had a jumping accident in her youth and could no longer jump. She was also a master of escape so wasn't allowed much turnout and I'd go and graze her in-hand whenever I could. 3. Toons. My first own horse. Toons is my soul mate. I love him so much I can't even describe how much. He is the kindest, sweetest, most gorgeous horse. He will be 9 in three days and has settled a lot and I feel I can really rely on him. Toons' idea of paradise is a field with his brother Spirit and approx. 4 mares with fillies. He LOVES foals and is so gentle (in some clumsy way). I've had him nearly 7 years now and we have learnt together really. 4. Jaz. My darling Jaz was a true gem of a mare to own. I feel so lucky to have been able to take care of her during her last few years and so sad to have had so little time with her. A right character yet so respectful. A real confidence giver, she loved to teach children but also absolutely adored going for full-speed (QH speed) gallops in open fields. I miss her. 5. Spirit. Spirit is Jaz' son and I feel like I have a little bit of her through him. He did inherit her cheeky, clever, independant character - without the respect. He is one stubborn horse and if you try and impose anything on him, he'll happily take you on the road of escalation (you wanna fight?). Spirit needs to be pleaded and praised. At 4, Spirit is giving me lots of work with his mischief but I do love him dearly. He is a bundle of joy and just like starting Toons taught me a lot, Spirit will certainly teach me further.

It is so hard to think of just 5! I've had a go, and in no particular order;- Sophie After riding since I could toddle, I finally bought my first horse aged 13. Knowing I was horse mad, my step father arranged for me to go and help a friend of his with his horses over winter. My charge was a 2 year old, grey mare called Sophie. Sophie was an absolute angel to do, and we built up quite a bond over long evenings of grooming. When she was backed I got to be the second person to ride her, and thought she was the most beautiful, smooth ride. As soon as a sale was mentionned, I begged and borrowed the money necessary to but Soph. We have been through a lot together since then (she is now 12) and I could never part with her. Vos Vos came to us last summer as a 5 year old. His owner had bought him just after he came away from stud (a spectacular failure on the racecourse and at stud ). We coverted Vos from the moment we saw him ... a beautiful, sleek TB who always seemed to shine. When we heard that his owner was going back to South Africa we jumped at the opportunity to have him. Although I had ridden and dealt with a lot of TBs before, Vos seemed very nervous and immature so he has had a year of going back to basics and after just doing fun things he seems to now relish time spent with people. Taffy I part loaned Taffy before being introduced to Sophie. A brilliant little welshie, Taffy taught me that hacking alone was actually great fun and we had many enjoyable pottering hacks. Taffy was the easiest possible horse to be around, always coming to the call and standing still for fiddling with gates. At 19, he retained a great enthusiasm for jumping and would happily boing over small cross country fences as if he was going around Badminton! I hope that he went on to be cherished and grow old happily. Tony Tony was a point to pointer who came with a reputation for kicking and biting. You never realise how good a horse person somebody is until you see a previously frustrated, unhappy beastie come right. Tony's owner demonstrated to me that you don't have to shout or hit to discourage undesirable behaviour, just create the right environment. Although only at the yard for a year, I never once saw Tony go to kick or bite anyone and he was an absolute lamb for me to handle. Jake Another point to point horse, owned by my YO. A brilliant little TB who I may never have got to ride, but who woudl make my day just by being an absolute angel. Jake would always come to his door after evening stables were done for a quick cuddle and fuss, even though he had been fed. At racecourses, Jake would look a different horse. We once went to a PtP without knowing he would be running - he was the horse I picked out to bet on in the ring. Later when we got a programme I realised I had been mucking this horse out for 2 years and hadn't recognised him or his owner Jake always jumped well, big and clean but was beaten by the quicker horses. He was always a champion to me, and my OH hopes that one day we will find him and buy him.

I think i'll begin at the begining so it all makes sense! hehe
1. Humphrey: humphrey was a gorgeous 15.2hh tricoloured gypsy vanner who i learnt to ride on. He was a real gentleman dispita hardly going out and lived at a local farm as a companion to the owner's gelding. Although a bit ploddy you could always depend on this big guy and i even managed to get three strides of canter out of him once! nobody really knows how old he was but i think he was in his twenties. unfortunatly i never got a picture of him. Humphrey used to eat a bown of cornflakes (with milk and sugar!) and a whole pack of chocolate digestives every evening that the lady next door used to feed him! when told that he needed to lose weight she immediatly altered his daily diet to cornflakes without sugar and plain digestives! unfortunatly this great gelding has now left us
2. Fudge: fudge was at the same farm to humphrey but belonged to a girl who had him there on field livery. She had lost her confidence in riding due to his naughty behaviour so who better to get to exercise him than a fearless learner! I owe it to fudge to the fact that a buck will never budge me! this little fellow at just 13.2hh knew every trick in the book and had me doing rodeo the first time i rode him out! The greediest pony you ever met fudge would eat anything and it showed in his figure! he had a huge fat body and head with stumpy legs and neck! second time i rode him he treated me to bolting towards a main road out of the forest and in the process of my trying to turn him to stop him jumped a bent tree! my first ever juming lesson! he also used to try and bite my friend's knee (who was teaching me while we hacked) every time his head came level!
3. Jester was another gypsy cob gelding this time on a different yard. i had him on part loan when my friend moved away and i could no longer ride fudge. Jester was an extremely grumpy piebald but everybody loved him. he was 15 when i first started riding him (4 years ago). jester was quick to try to take a chunk out of your arm or give you a good strong kick with one of his huge hooves as you went past! although a bit of a plodder jester could really get moving if he wanted to and could jump surprisingly well (although very oddly!) he was a very strong boy and could be very protective over mares. My own mare HATED him with a passion! Jester was sold but i still see him ever day as i drive past his field and call out to him. i stopped riding him about 3 years ago when his owner finished her exams and wanted to ride him again but she never did. My very good friend rode him from then untill the time he was sold earlier this year and absolubly adored him - they made a great cow and milk maid at the fancy dress!
4. Rosie - my current mare is the cutest horse you'll ever see (ok so i'm biased!). I have had her for just over three years when i got her from a dealer in conwy who specialised in irish horses when she was four. Although she was hardly broken and extremely green she has always tried her hardest with everything and is great with other horses too (except coloured ones - she hasn't seen her reflection! she HATES any coloured horses) She is tricoloured tobiano and is a gypsy vanner x connemara. she now stands at 15hh. Rosie is a very playful little girl and extremely cheeky! she has huge antenae ears which are constantly hyperactive! Rosie can untie any knot you tie her up with and always times her escapes perfectly, including jumping out of her field when she fancies it! with rosie i have mainly hacked out and jumped and the highest i have measred her jump in the menage is 3ft. Rosie hates any fom of force so practically forces anyone handling her to adopt IH methods!
5. well seeing as they are both so tiny and always come as a pair i am going to count clipclop and dancer as one! I have only known these little shetland geldings for about 3 minths yet i fell in love instantly. They belong to my neighbour and live in the field next door to me. clipclop is 18 years old and is a chestnut, dancer is a 6 year old dark bay/black. the little girls next door ride them (3yrs and 5yrs) however dancer is a new addition from beeston and keeps throwing them off. he is very green indeed and i have been asked to ride and train him. He is such a hard worker and is coming on leaps and bounds. i look rediculous on them but they can easily take me as i'm really small and skinny.

Chronological order, not in order of favourites as I love them all!
1. Sixpence. A very pretty Welsh Mountain pony, 12.2 who I looked after for a couple of years and was allowed to pretty much treat as my own by his owners. The very first time I went to see him to try him out I vaulted on - and went so high I went clean over the other side! But the owners must have liked me as I was lucky enough to ride him and look after him. I didn't know he wasn't particularly traffic proof, and one day rode him along side a really busy main rode with him in a headcollar and bareback. Those were the days... And he didn't bat an eyelid. His owners couldn't believe it.
One of my friends at the same field bought a 13.2 pony called Shannon and we used to ride out together all the time. Then when Paula was going to University she needed someone to look after Shannon. Which was perfect as Sixpence's owners were sadly moving away, back to Wales where the family were from.
2. Shannon. Pony of a lifetime. Looked after him from when I was 9 until I was 11, when we were then lucky enough to buy him. My life revolved around my lovely 13.2 Fell pony, he was absolutely my world. I still remember now the very proud day when he was officially mine. Mum and I walked to Paula's house with the cash to buy him. (We didn't have a car as Mum didn't drive. And as a single mum it took her 18 months to save up to buy him for me). And then we went to the field and I rode him as "my pony" - the feeling of pride, love and happiness was overwhelming. There wasn't anything I wouldn't/couldn't do with my precious boy. And he saved my life once, but that is another story. This is a happy post.
When we sadly lost him when I was 22 to cancer of the heart I thought my heart would break too. From that day I stopped riding, stopped teaching, turned away from horses as I didn't want to be around any other horse but Shannon.
3. 17 years later I went to see and fell in love with the gorgeous Bobby. Well Bobby Joe to use his full name. Which is really funny, as my initials are B J. He was the third horse I saw. The first one was a schoolmaster, perfectly schooled etc and would have been ideal for a return to rider. But something was missing, just didn't click. At the next place they led out a horse and I told them to not even tack it up, it was too much horse for me. But I turned to Bobby and said oh he looks nice, and they said he was the other one they were going to show me. It was instant love! And Bobby chose me as much as I chose him. I can't explain it, but he called to me at every level and I knew he had to be mine.
I owe this generous, handsome and forgiving horse everything. He set me down the road to Intelligent Horsemanship and the like as it became obvious fairly shortly after I got him that he must have been pretty much shut down when I saw him, because of the huge changes in his relatively short life. It was like once he came home to me he knew he was here forever and he could start to let his guard down and try to deal with some of his issues.
I have laughed, cried, felt sick to the stomach at the though of riding him, nearly burst with pride at breakthrough's we've had, felt sick with excitement at the thought of riding him, wibbled again, felt I wasn't good enough for him, realised actually we are a great partnership together and everything else in the time we have been together. But most of all I have loved this stunning horse with every part of me through everything, and am so thankful and grateful that we came into each others' lives. I love him through and through and believe he was sent to me by Shannon to help me on my journey with horses.
4. Clover. My little Cloverbelle Poppet, my angel. We were lucky enough to have her on loan last year for three months as a confidence giver for me - all thanks to June. Five days into the loan I called her - and she literally came cantering over to me. I stood there with tears streaming down my face! She adores fuss and cuddles and is a very lovely horse. Her owner came to see her towards the end of the loan to see if she would be up to winter polo - and thankfully decided she wouldn't be and we were able to do a deal to buy her. My heart was in my mouth when the owner came over. And Clover was being her absolute clingiest to me, whinnying to me when we got to the yard and cantering over - again! I had already whispered in her ear to be stiff in the legs when W rode her, and I'd like to think she listened. W couldn't believe the difference in her though in terms of how attached she and I were to each other and the great relationship we had. So thankfully we were able to do a deal to buy her and in October last year became her proud owners.
She has taught OH to ride and is now teaching my best friend. She is great fun, a real character and VERY pretty now that she has a flowing mane instead of being hogged.
5. There have been numerous other horses in my life, too many to name individually. But Gabby the little skewbald shetland who I used to ride when I first progressed off of the two donkey's I used to sit on when I was a toddler. Skippy at the riding school I used to work out who used to buck like crazy with most people, but never with me. Snoopy, a lovely strawberry roan 14.2 angel. Trampas a really big chunky Shire x who was soooooo bouncy but fab once you got used to him. And many many more, who I will remember, appreciate and love always.
What a great thread!

1. Sam the white pony who lived behind the pub. I must have been about 7/8 and my dad and granddad were doing up a pub in Yorkshire nr Settle. The girl who lived there had a pony called Sam and I literally spent all day talking to him whenever we went up there. She let me have a ride on him once.
2. Babycham. The 5yo Palomino mare that I first managed to do rising trot with at Radcliffe Riding Centre when my parents finally relented and let me have riding lessons.
3. Clockwork Sunny. 14.1hh palomino Arab x mare. My first pony, when I was 12. She was ex-BSJA, speed specialist and never went anywhere slower than a jog.
4. General Silver. Crabbet Arab stallion. Owned by my Auntie in SW Wales. Spent a whole summer looking after him and riding him when I was 14, thinking I was the D's B's and not quite believing my luck.
5. Crystal. 15.2hh Lipizzaner x Anglo Arab. My dream horse, bought for me by my husband as a wedding present when she was a yearling.
I realise there's quite a few I've missed out here!
I have a photo of General somewhere, and of course of Crystal, but I don't have photos of the others.

Heres my five. Sorry no pics as i havent worked out how to do that yet. Firstly is Brandy who i lovingly called Gorgeous for obvious reasons, even if only to me. He was and always will be my horse, well pony in a million, i brought him from the riding school where i worked, he was a very grumpy 13hh grey heinz 57 and when i finally got him after 9yrs of waiting he was around 40yrs old. I learnt everything on him and owed him so much which is why i kept my promise all those years and brought him when it was time for me to move on to a new job. Unfortunatly just into a year after buying him i lost him one summer afternoon, an hour before he was as right as rain happily munching away in the field with his mates i went for my dinner but when i got back he was lay down by the gateway, i reckon he knew how heart broken i would of been to finally make that final desision that he made it for me. Out of all my gang i know that i could without a doubt be there to the bitter end but Brandy was different we had been through so much, but thats another story. Next is Rufus however he preferred being called 'Baby Bear' he was only just 4 when he was lost to ragwort poisoning. I was lucky enough to look after him and ride him, he would of eventually become a carriage horse and been in a team of four for horse drawn funerals, he was such a wonderful character and even when really ill could make you smile with his antics. The third would be Wilbur a point to point racehorse who i helped look after and occasionally rode at weekends, he was the most beautiful and gentle tb i know and he had a heart of gold Ronnie would be 4th, he was a college horse on working livery at berriewood stables he was dark bay and probs around 15hh and 16yrs old, he was for sale but i didnt know until it was too late. I wasnt the best rider at the time and was always being yelled at except when i rode Ronnie, even though at first i didnt notice my instructor said we had a bond which i finally realised unfortunatly it was short lived as he was sold on, i just wish i knew coz at the time i was looking for a horse of my own. I've not got a 5th that springs to mind so i would like to say my gang, i know technically it should be 5 horses but 4 and a herd aint too bad is it? I am extremely lucky to have 9 in my gang and even though only 2 are semi rideable i wouldnt swop them for anything, due to them all being 'problem horses' i have my hands full. Over the years they have taught me so much and the only way i see fit to repay them is by giving them a home for life.
