I'm NOT from South Africa, but I am going there for next New Year. Would any of you be kind enough to offer advice on where to go sight seeing in Cape Town? And where to avoid! I will research myself, but local knowledge is always invaluable. Also, would Vic Falls be worth the extra flight at that time of year? PM me if you want to. Cheers

YAY!! People from SA! Glad to hear it. Everyone REALLY likes the Cape, don't they?!
Visit Table Mountain definitely. I'm not one for the city itself but there are lovely nature reserves around and don't forget to visit a couple of wine farms!
Vic Falls should be really amazing - it's summer so all the better!

PD - there are loads of tourist info websites, but as a start have a look at www.aboutcapetown.com/If you're going to be based in / around the Cape, then Table Mountain is a must. You can either climb or take the cable car and if you're feeling brave, you can abseil off the top! If you like hiking, you could also consider hiking up Lion's Head - it's a great climb and the views from the top are beautiful. Do drive along Camps Bay - lots of good restaurants and nightlife. Chapmans Peak is also definitely worth the drive - really scenic. The Cape Point Nature Reserve is well worth a visit. Very beautiful and lots of lovely quiet beaches. The Cape Town City Bowl also has loads of good restaurants, clubs and good nightlife. You could go to see the Penguins at Boulders Beach? Our botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch are lovely - it's great to pack a picnic (or have lunch at one of the restaurants) and then just chill out under a tree for the afternoon. I'd definitely recommend lunch at the Brass Bell or at any of the cute restaurants around Kalk Bay. If you have a car and are happy to go further afield then the wine route is a must. Stellenbosch and Franschoek are beautiful. Stunning wine estates, beautiful Cape Dutch architecture and lovely wine ! Quite a few of the estates offer picnics so you can order a basket and find yourself a spot somewhere out in the grounds and chill out for the day. Spier and Boschendal are particularly popular for this. Spier also has a cheetah sanctuary and you can go in and stroke the cheetahs if you like. You can also go hiking in the nature reserve at Jonkershoek just outside Stellenbosch. Further afield, Hermanus is a cute little coastal town which has become very popular. Usually the whales have all gone by December, but they were out till quite late this year, so you might be lucky and still catch a few stragglers in the bay. If you're happy to drive a little further afield, you could visit the southern most tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas and inbetween you can consider shark cage diving at Gansbaai! SA offers loads of outdoor sports and you can do just about anything you fancy - surfing, gliding, sky diving, bunjy jumping, mountain biking, scuba diving, white water rafting, hiking, horse riding, helicopter flips, etc. Or you can opt just to sun yourself leisurely on a beach! It really is a world in one country - the Cape has a Mediterranean climate and is generally warm and sunny in summer, there are rain forests near Knysna and the Karoo is dry and arid. Natal has a tropical climate with summer rainfall, so it's warm and lush and green over the summer. The West Coast (just north of Cape Town) is also becoming increasing popular and there are lots of little cute villages you can stay at - Paternoster is particularly pretty and there is a great restaurant nearby called Muisbosskerm built right on the beach which is definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. Vic Falls is quite a distance away, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it unless you're planning a good long trip as it will take a good few days out of your holiday. There really is loads to do for all budgets, so grab a Lonely Planet or any other guidebook and see what takes your fancy. You'll definitely have a great time and we'd love to hear all about it afterwards !

Hi zsuzsanna, I haven't looked at this thread for a couple of weeks, but was delighted to see your reply with so much information. Thanks very much for the time you took to write it. I'm shortly booking my flights so its going to be used well. We will have a car, so will be able to do a lot of the things you have suggested. Best wishes Tracey

Hello!! It's great to see South Africans taking part in IH discussion! Any one from the free state? pd, I agree with zsuzsanna on the tourist attractions, but i'd like to add that when we were in cape town recently we were warned about hiking up the table mountain. There has been quite a lot of muggings, so try to go in a big group. Or take the cable car, much easier!! Enjoy your trip! Vic Falls is nicer in winter, not as hot then and fewer mozzies!

Hi all South African IH Enthusiasts, Exciting news - Kelly & the IH team are coming back to SA !! Due to overwhelming demand after last year's tour, Kelly & the team will be back in South Africa this December, demonstrating, educating and inspiring ! We are holding 3 demonstrations this year as follows:- Sunday, 14 December - SA Jockey Academy, Summerveld, Durban Tuesday, 16 December - SA Lipizzaner Centre, Kyalami, Joburg Saturday, 20 December - Cape Indoor Riding Centre, Joostenbergvlakte Kelly will once again be demonstrating the principles of Join-Up and Intelligent Horsemanship to help a variety of horses with problems. Each demo will have a starter so that you can see Join-Up and first saddle, bridle and rider. Then Kelly will work with one or two 'problem' horses, finding 'intelligent' solutions for both horse and rider. Finally, we round off the demo with Kelly's favourite - tricky loaders. Each demo is different, so whether you came to last year's demo and want to learn more, or are coming to see Kelly for the first time, there's something for everyone. Also - if you have a horse that might need a bit of help, why not volunteer? All behaviour problems welcome! Can’t box, can’t ride, can’t shoe, can’t catch, can't clip, difficult to mount, or maybe you’ve just got a nice youngster for starting? Why not bring them along ? Every volunteer horse that gets chosen to come along will be given 2 free tickets as a thank you. Please see our website, www.intelligenthorsemanship.co.za for more details. See you in December !
