I've been buying Supabed from Countrywide in Thornbury all winter for the neds but the price has gone up nearly £1 a bale which is ridiculous, and they'd run out last time I was in there so I ended up with Easibed at £7.20 a bale instead!!! With 2 ponies I can't afford to pay that for however long this weather goes on for... So what is the cheapest bedding and where from...happy to travel up as far as Berkeley and down as far as Weston! Thankies eta heard someone on another board talking about Miscanthus in Weston - how much is that and is it any good?

They use Miscanthus on my yard and it seems like a good bedding, smaller bits than easybed and it was quite cheap around £4.50 a bale....

We use good old shavings on our yard Chloe, they sell them to us for £5 a bale but if you were looking for cheaper Mendip Shavings also do Multimix which is straw chopped with shavings and is lovely and soft.

Miscanthus from here, not all that far from you, have been using it since October and very pleased, works ideally as semi deep litter, I have it on top of rubber mats, 3 to make bed and about 1/2 bale every 2 weeks. www.fennington-fibres.co.uk/

Mendip shavings are huge Chloe, even when I was up in Sussex, they supplied our yard! LOL! Made me feel rather homesick. They are based up at Charterhouse on the Mendips!

Ooooooh thanks, that's closer to me than the others - do you know if they've kept the prices the same as if you were to buy direct from Mendip?

Hi I'm not sure how much it is direct from Mendip but I think from Cow Mills it is about £5.50 - £6 a bale

The more you buy I should think the cheaper they are. We pay £5.50 at our yard and they order them in by the pallet load, so probably paying around £4.50/£5 a bale.

We use wood pellets from White Horse Bedding - Economy range is £2.39 including VAT delivered to your door for a 10kg bag (depending on how much you buy - we buy 100 bags a time). Takes about 12 bags to set the bed up and then its about 1 to 2 bags a week. You justy pick the poo off the top and dig out the urine patch. Pellets break down beautifully, literally no dust, and we have gone from removing 3-4 wheel barrow loads of shavings a day (were using 3 - 4 bags a week for just my horse at £6.50 a bale) to removing one wheel barrow a day, consequently the muck heap is way smaller as well. (premium range is about £3.50 a bag and seems to be a mpre pleasing yellowy colour rather than the dull beige of the economy range!). We were really sceptical to begin with but wouldn't want to use anything else now.
