What are her udders like at the moment? Can you feel/see the foal moving at all?
No idea at all, although February seems a really unlikely time for a mare to be covered, even if she was running with a stallion, but they do, says she who has a mare due in November because she felt fruity at Christmas time.
I would do as you are doing, keep her in at night and just keep watching her and getting to know what is normal for her and what is not. Late night checks could be the order of the day too, baby monitors in the stable are very good too, at least you can hear if there is anything out of the ordinary going on.
They are all so different. My arab mare looks bigger in the belly than that now and she has 5 months to go, but then she is a stick insect with a bump. The Painted Pony, although taller and chunkier, and with 4 months to go, by comparison, has a far smaller belly, but she is a maiden whereas the arab has probably had 5 or 6 foals before now.

lolamae, her udders are normal,no change since she first came.I havent noticed any movement. I have a horse coming from spain this month, and he was a jan foal, which is apparently quite common, especially further south. How common do you think it easy for them to be completely sly and not give a clue?!

Well it's no good asking me.....we have been watching Maybelline like a hawk for over 5 months now and STILL no foalie!!
Bonita looks rounded in the summer too and fairly huge now, perhaps they will foal at the same time?

Sarah, Hi,
Yes, I see what you mean about the early foals, it does depend a bit on the weather I should think.
Completely sly? I was in the same position with a mare bought in December last year, I knew she was in foal, she looked ready to drop then, but kept me waiting until May and then did the "No, nothing happening here" routine on me and the foal was on the ground the next morning........absolutely no clues whatsoever. No loosening, that was visible, no waxing, dripping milk, no colicky signs, no restlessness......nothing, I'm keeping her in if I can this year. Last years was almost coyote bait. At least you don't have them to worry about.

Hi Sarah - def pregnant but she doesn't look particularly close compared to photos I have seen of mares getting ready - get some udder shots if you can... As she's 12 she may well be not be a maiden and I would expect her therefore to show more signs and get a lot bigger yet!! Once you get udder development you can squeeze a little out - it starts of a watery yellow but when it goes opaque and milky in colour then you have 24 hours!!! I sound like a pro but I really am not - I have a pregnant mare (planned) and have been on this great forum for breeding.... www.equine-reproduction.com/board/messages/board-topics.htmlIn fact - I have seen Maybelline piccies on there!! In fact, it was seeing Maybelline posts that I learnt of the rescues and ended up with my 2 from France. You can post up on there and have the real experts cast their eye over... x

Looking at equine section, it seems that some of the mares there now have started to foal, so anything is possible. I'm certainly no expert (always had boys) so I just hope she's got a while to go yet.
