There is definitely a way to do it using the IBAN/BIC/RIB that takes minutes because I get paid here in Belgium by clients in the UK fairly often. When somebody doesn't pay and I remind them, very often after they email to say it's now been done, it's there within the hour.
Businesses in France are harder to pay however, as I've had to get my mother in law to send cheques in the past when booking holidays as they won't take Visa or give account numbers.
If that is the case Western Union might be the best bet or you get your bank to draw up a bank draft (a special cheque guaranteed for the full amount on it) in Euros and use Federal Express or DHL to get it over there.
Failing all that take an Easyjet flight from Luton or Bristol to Bordeaux and pay the man in cash yourself - stay one night in an Etap hotel for about 40 euros and come back on the flight the next day.

Hi Dizzy, Please look at www.moneygram.com You need to take the money to your nearest post office (they have this facility in Easingwold) and ask for a money gram. They can transfer the money immediately and it will be available for collection in France after 10 minutes. You do of course need to find out if there is a participating agent near to the farmer (in France) which you will find out on the website and you need to rely on him going there to collect it. It will cost you about £50. Hope this helps Good luck x
