its just all so sad isant it, im sorry every one i did not mean for a debate , if you feel like it is right to sign the petition please do so if you dont then obviousley dont sign it , we are all doing our best to try and stop the suffering and we all seem to have the same aim. i would not wish for any horse to go through any of this i was just making people aware of the site incase they were interested as until i was told about it i did not know it was there.

Thankyou for making us aware, I for one had no idea this went on in the uk. I was very surprised they went abroad on the hook. I hope in time all animals sheep pigs cattle can all travel this way. I would rather no animal went through any of it but it is a fact of life so a short journey to slaughter is a step in the right direction. I just felt if we got it stopped here then we are actually putting all those horses at greater risk of being crammed into lorries and driven for days to meet the same end.

Sad fact of life but this is the 'best' end for many racehorses. It is also in step with what the ILPH are campaigning for 'on the hook, not the hoof' and I don't think we can harrass the abattoir when it's the racing industry that needs to get it's house in order. I have an ex-racer, they're not for the faint-hearted and I'd rather he had been taken from the track to the nearest abattoir than end up 'rescued' in the wrong home that wasn't able to cope with their 'special needs'. Sadly, there are just too many of them to guarantee that.... In short, I won't be signing the petition.

But I don't think the very good tempered debate over this is anything we should be ashamed of. We all regret this - none of us would do it. And nobody is angry with the rest of us.

I agree with Sarahfox and Gillmcg. Whilst the practice disgusts me, until we stop breeding horses at such a rate we can't really hope for a better outcome than this. Very, very sad, but the slaughter is not the root of this problem

We've watched the rough ponies and cobs in many markets go, terrified , through the rings. Packed into the pens outside, then round comes the meat drovers with their markers. It used to be one dealer would use a red mark for Belgium and another would mark blue for France, Now we see some horses/ponies might have two or even three glue marks where they have been through tha tmany auctions. Poor bedraggled urchins that should never be bred. All you see in their eyes is fear. You can only hope that the journey to UK slaughter lairage is their best hope. The whole subject is emotive and full of 'what if's' and ' if only's' and 'buts'

Indeed I think that while its horrid that they get slaughtered Id far rather they were slaughtered in the Uk than travelling days in cramped conditions!

I'm sorry you don't see British horses as so important in the slaughter issue Gem. Such a shame as many do end up going to the EU and then on to the Slaughter houses in Italy. However everyone is entitled to their opinion and respect yours on this issue.

EMW the dartmoor hill pony sales are heartbreaking. I have not got the space or the money that I had, but maybe I could sponsor one until you can get it fit to rehome? do you do a sponsorship scheme?

While slaughter in Britain, for British horses is preferable, many are traveled live to the EU. Horses can leave Britain via Ireland and from Ireland can be traveled to the continent. Many of the poor animals that end up in markets should never have been born, I agree. Thats what we should campaign against, however controlling breeding is a long way off. Stopping the equines leaving Britain alive should be a priority. These animals should not even make it to market as conditions there are far from ideal. many foals are weaned in the market itself, it is then that the ill fated colts are driven up the ramps of the meat lorries to an uncertain fate. It is true that many" rescues" end up in the wrong hands but this can happen in any situation with any animal. Not every market in Britain is bad but I have seen the worst of the worst and it is very hard not to be touched by those desperate faces.

EMW, I would sponsor a bog standard brown colt.... as a tribute to My DHP Maestro, who repayed everything I ever spent on rescuing him when he provided forensic (horsehair) which helped convict an attempted rapist!!! I still have Maestro, and he lives the life of riley on a thoroughbred stud, babysitting yearlings and being family pony. I secretly dream that one day they will ask me to take him back now I have a grandson of my own, however, he is very much adored by the family who have him on loan

thunderspright... there are too many being bred. sorry, but when I went to visit (approx 3 years ago) I was told that black/brown colts were being shot on the moor. What is the point? that is not preservation breeding.
