I dont think anyone needs to justify being nervous as there's all manner of pathways and triggers that leads to that response my boy has many issues, psychological and physiological and I admit I was ''proving a point'' when I got him (he was not in a nice way at the time so doing the horse a favour) neither is a good reason to buy a horse but that was a year ago and TBH i doubt I'll ride him, I have done, but never felt particularly 'safe', coupled with him 'objecting' with a full on standup ;D my nerves originate from thinking I ''should'' be riding him and what other people must think of me for not riding, this then transfers to be berating myself about my lack of ability to the point where I get that horrible tummy roll feeling when I even think about riding another horse (even my child's pony who is a complete angel) I just simply feel that I'm not good enough to ride the one, therefore not good enough to ride anything I personally think that all nervousness boils down to an experience somewhere along the line, may be insignificant to most people and maybe even on something regarded as a school master but it might be enough to become a trigger later on. If its valid enough a feeling to keep re-surfacing then it was an experience we've obviously subconciously kept hold of for self-preservation! I'm rambling.... and not a very good ramble at that Lovely horse Kanga!

Joing www.photobucket.com. It's free. You then browse and upload images from your computer. When they are in your album, tick the picture you want to post (in the box below it) and go down to Generate HTML (bottom of screen), click to next screen and take one of the options for posting on DGs, I think its the third one I use (not the clickable thumbnails). Copy the code that is there (http... blah..blah) and paste it into your message on the DG. Voila!

fluffypony, so glad you posted this. Mine is a lot like yours - a shortish (14.2 hh) fellow, rising eight, I've had several offers from mothers to buy him as a hunter pony for their little daughters , yet I just can't find my nerve with him. I think it's because I bought him as a very green ungelded youngster, when I was a very green adult novice, with the predictable result that we scared each other silly. Well, ok, maybe I was more scared than he. But anyway. So I bought a suitable horse to learn on and found him a suitable human to learn with, and put him on full livery for a few years. Now, he's matured into a calm, kind soul who knows his job very well - and even makes an extra effort to be more careful when I ride him than he is with his trainer. It's as though I somehow got in the habit of being frightened around him and can't break it. It hasn't helped that I recently moved both my horses from their boarding stable to my home. Now that I'm completely alone with him, I'm far too terrified to ride him and I'm even frightened of going into the field with him. When he was younger, he had the disconcerting habit of coming straight for me at a dead run, sometimes leading half his herdmates, and veering away at the last second. He hasn't done it in ages, but I can't seem to let bygones be bygones. I don't feel this way at all about my older horse and feel really silly that I seem to be holding a grudge against my younger one.

I have definitely had a confidence dip since buying my horse. A lot of it is related to the fact that I hadn't ridden for five years when I bought him, as a lightly backed six year old, which in hindsight wasn't an ideal situation. Secondly the process of backing him proved more difficult then I expected, we had a lot of issues to deal with and it made me question my capabilites and I lost faith in myself. The first time I ever rode my horse he bucked me straight off. That was a year ago and although my riding has been sporadic through unsoundnes since then he hasn't put a foot wrong and yet I'm still nervous of riding him. I think because he was tense when I got on it made me tense and nervous too. This photo demonstrates that perfectly!

Cetan, that last photo demonstrates perfectly to me, how my horse looks when i am about to get on him, yet he is not like that with my friend! So my nerves get to him aswell.
He looks extremely tense to me there ,but im hypersensitive over it, and I couldnt have got on him like that. So well done .xxx He is gorgeous by the way.xx

I have to say he was particularly tense that day and I was only onboard for about 20 seconds before getting off! Giftgirl, what's the time span between those two photos being taken? In the first one judging by your expression and tense arms you look quite nervous whereas the second photo is a much happier and relaxed picture. I agree with Amarche that many different triggers can make us nervous. I remember going to my local riding school and happily getting on some 'challenging horses' but then being nervous about riding a quiet school horse. I even got off and walked home a dartmoor pony I felt unsafe on, even though it hadn't done anything wrong. There didn't seem to be any logic or reason to my decisions. Maybe it's just an instinctive feeling. In the same way that there are some people we hit it off with straight away and others who we feel uncomfortable around.
