I am a single mother with two daughters that show and love it. As the season approaches once again and the girls look forward to it I start to panic about the expense of it so any tips on how to show on a budget??

Not really, as the expenses are entry fees and transport. Tack, clothes, etc. can be bought second hand.
That is why people start dealing I suppose, to fund their competing, whether it is showing, eventing or anything else.

Everything except hats second hand - places like charity shops are good for ties/scrunchies etc. Have you tried ebay? You don't need top brand names for everything, often cheaper versions of anything from jods to cleaning products are as good as brand names. Some people make their own browbands if you need a fancy one.
You might like to freshen up old white shirts/jods by putting them in the wash with some very cheap dusters - it gives them a lemon colour which lasts for a good few washes. Yellow/canary is quite fashionable in showing.

Thanks, I like the duster one - am going to try that. I know it is an expensive past time and I find its the everday things like show sheen etc that mounts up in expenses - there the little expenses you dont notice! Most of their clothing is from ebay and they are turned out as good as every one else. I agree everything doesnt have to be new as long as its clean etc. .Anyone know yet what shows are hoys qualifiers?

Feed Black Sunflower Seeds - the shine then comes from within so you don't need as much spray etc - instead of chalk for white bits wash with the following - cheap washing up liquid + 2 scoops of vanish and a spray of purple spray - leave 5 mins to soak and rinse off then bandage having covered legs in talc - sparkling white socks in the morning. I never buy horse shampoo just use cheap washing up liquid instead - tesco value is excellent

Cubic, don't you find that washing up liquid which is a detergent, strips all the oils out of the coat thereby reducing natural shine. When I was showing, I never bathed them all over as I fed linseed and strapped them. Only their manes and tales and legs ever needed bathing.

i use fairy liquid for white tails and socks. But on SS3's advice am not going to bath fully anymore in order to keep the natural oils.
sorry not got any grand ideas on saving money - wish i did know some!!

Mind you Amelia, if we had greys ------------------------------- My show horses have been mainly greys since I was 10 years old, so that's what I'm used to - not washing them really isn't an option when they live out most of the summer. With the bays I usually wash them at the beginning of the season to get all the gunk out (particularly over the hind quarters), and then just do mains/tails and occasionally the backside again if it's filthy, plus lots of grooming.

Mind you Amelia, if we had greys ------------------------------- hmmmmm.... yep i do have a grey - only did one show with her and that was quite enough lol!! Day before the show the baggage managed to climb out of her full neck turnout, dig a muddy hole and wallow in it - resulting in a brown horse So yes on that ocassion i most certainly did bath all over.....twice!!

ori is really dusty! so she is going to need a full bath but she is has a gorgeous shine on her at the moment, i feed her baileys outshine and its worked a treat! as for vanish - i'd be worried about using it incase they had a reaction as i doubt its tested on animals so i think i'd steer clear. ive always been advised to either dry chalk the day of the show or wash legs, use supreme white paste and bandage overnight. i love ebay too and equestrianclearance.co.uk

Feed oil too - helps keep a shine to coats.
Ebay is brilliant for almost everything, including lotions and potions.
