Did you know that certain photographic companies charge more at horse events (like double the price) than other sporting events. This is because they think that horse owners have more money than most! Don't they realise that we have very little money left over because we spend it all looking after our horses properly (and obviously paying more for over priced items like photos because some ignorant people think we have money to burn)! My husband has done a bit of offroad motobike racing and the photo company there told him that they charge double the amount at horse events! I think this is terrible and something ought to be done about it. Do organisers check out the prices before they arrange for us to be ripped off like this? Is there any other areas that we are being ripped off?

We have a running joke at our yard, if the word equestrian is put on something for sale, ie clothing etc, then the price gets quadrupled.

I refer to this as EAT - Equestrian Added Tax. For this reason I buy as little as possible from tack shops, mail order, anything to do with horses really (exception being saddle/bridle and numnahs etc obviously!). I had a field shelter made up for £500 last year. If I'd had the same size done by a 'reputable equestrian company' it would have cost a minimum of £1500. Hmmmmm!

I wonder if you could complain to the Office of Fair Trading if you could get proof?

Hi Captive audience really though equs much expensus ! a friend of mine does equine photography and works for himself and travels to shows for people . We run an equestrian event photography business and it's been said many a time that we're too cheap! *reflects on the days we've only just broken even and nods* Actually perhaps we are!

I want to have a set of proffessional photographs done of some of mine, one of my stallion, a couple of my old mare (my baby!) one of my SHP and one of my son with his coloured pony. I wanted them done in the spring on a nice sunny day BUT I have found to have a photographer out and to buy A4 type size photographs it will cost me around 300 pounds!!!!
A few years ago I had worked with a photographer who was just taking up horses, he did fabulous large photos that looked like watercolours. They cost 45 pounds each. I bought two of my highland at a show and got him to take one of me jumping a mare over a large log in the field which I also bought. He was told his photos were cheap for what they were, and I think they were right as the quality and look of the photos was exceptional. Sadly Ive lost touch with him now and dont know if he still does photos!
Jo A where are you based?
If anyone can reccomend a good photographer in my area (manchester) could you let me know, my old girl is not getting any younger and I really really want some proffessional photos of her, one that wouldnt be terrified to take a picture in the field...lol

Jo R - we're in Lincolnshire and our webby is hoofpixphotography.co.uk but we're in debate about whether to carry on because a) I got so sick of watching people beat up and abuse their horses last summer and b) we very rarely make enough money to make it worth our while. We've also such a saturation of photographers in Lincs that we're constantly competing for jobs.

you are probably too far from me (Cheshire), I must say I never see photographers at the locals here, I cant remember ever seeing a photographer at out agricultural show and I am sure a LOT of people who go there would want to buy pictures of thier horses (It is held bi annually) Only times I see photographers is at the counties, I remember there not being a photographer at one NCPA event with HOYS qualifiers in WHP a few years ago.
Maybe you would consider a move over here?!!!! There are a lot of PC/RC events within an hours dirve, also a welsh medal show (bowlee), there wasnt a photographer there I could see when I went last year (I was stewarding for the RC there when the medal show was on) and how many people would like a proffessional photograph of thier pony winning a bronze medal?! I would!
Maybe it would be worth the journey over here for the agricultural show (is held in may) and I could get you to take some pictures for me then lol.
your prints start as little as 4.49 well within the budget of most RC/PC attendees, cant believe you are struggling!

not just horse events, I took my little boy to a local farm which is a visitor farm to see santa. i had 3 copies of a photo they took of him in the grotto about 20cm x 15cm 4" x 6" and it cost me 12 quid for a print on a photo printer from a laptop....

Jo - very tempted to move over there but I'd miss the murders and petrol bombs! Lol!
Seriously, I can think of about 5 other photographers here who we regularly have to jostle with to try and get even the smallest of events. Doesn't help that one of them is on the local PC committee either! I would LOVE to move and it's top of my 'To Do' list. Thanks for the interest and encouragement - I shall mention your comments to OH, I've been telling him that that we're in the wrong place for ages but I think he's forming the opinion that they just don't pay and it's not worth him spending the whole day on his feet for. Sigh, and don't get me started on the abuse part........... (Grrrr)
Jinks - we print from a laptop but it's all top quality equipment and paper. Did you pay £12 for 3 6" x 4" prints or just the one?!!!!! Eeeek!!!
