Does anyone know if the effect of a calmer is reduced if it's mixed into a feed that's soaked overnight? I'm using the Feel Good 30 science one (magnesium, lecithin & various B vits) & feeding Allen & Page Ride & Relax which I soak overnight as it will absorb a LOT of water - if anyone's feeding it dry then please be careful, if you add warm water you can actually see the feed expanding! If it's going to reduce the effect I can add it in the morning but this way he doesn't seem to notice it in his feed

Hi amma I'm sorry to hear about your friend's horse, glad he was ok in the end. I must admit that the food swells up so much I feel it should have some sort of warning on the bag, as it is all they say is to feed it damped & add chaff. I put 3/4 of a scoop in 1/3 of a black rubber feed skip of water & in a couple of hours it's all soaked up. It's scary to think what it could happen if a horse got fed a couple of scoops of it dry! On the plus side though my horse thinks he's getting LOADS of feed

As magnesium is a mineral whether it's wet or dry shouldn't make any difference. After all it gets wet in the ground to no disadvantage.

I'll let you into a secret - I asked a very similar question of Jackie Taylor! I asked whether it 'went off' over time because of storing such a lot. So you're not alone!

Ive noticed this with ride and relax naria but will the food go off if its soaked over night, only asking because I was actually thinking along those lines. Sorry I have no answer to your actual question.

Meg my horse happily eats his when it's been soaked overnight & I've been feeding it like that for quite a while now with no ill effect. If you don't want to soak it then it absorbs hot water much faster so you could use that & then add some cold to cool it down enough to eat. I don't know if soaking would reduce the vit & min levels - I think I heard somnewhere that feeds left wet for a long time could have lower levels - but that doesn't worry me as I give a supplement that I add just before feeding.

would nt soaking the feed with hot water damage the vitamins??? heat denatures the structure of vitamins and would prob. break them down! making them totaly useless.
anyway i'm glad to have read this thead as i was considering feeding this to my horse, but i think i'll stick to pasture mix!

Swallows mum I wouldn't let how much the feed expands put you off feeding it, just be aware & make sure you wet it well & allow a bit of time for it to soak (cold water's fine). Apart from that I've been really pleased with it & will continue to use it. As I said before the plus side of how much it swells up is horses think they're getting loads!

I swamp mine and let it stand for 20mins this seens to be ok. My horse looks good on it though. Does anyone have any experience with other A&P feeds, the stud and youngstock seems fine.

My friend bought some A&P slim and healthy for the fatties yesterday and my mare choked on it she cleared it herslf in 20mins.Didn't think of dampening it but we are now.She has never been known to choke on anything before and has recently had her teeth done so its not that. 'Slim and healthy' more like 'fat and dead'
