We have tow different hoofs in horses,one is white hoof and the other is black the black hoff is very hard and the white hoof is very soft therefore you should be careful riding with no shoe and it is better to ride in snow wthout shoe as all agree,but only walk is safer.

persianhorse-- my horses have some white and some black hooves and I find they are all as hard as each other so does my trimmer when she's trimming them.
To my knowledge the black is only colour and not part of the hoof structure.

When Henry was shod I also had snow problems. I used vaseline to great effect. Not had a problem with his barefoot hooves, but then it doesn't seem to snow like it used to, sob!
