Hi and Merry Christmas!! Thinking ahead to the Spring - it will come won't it?! What to do with an extremely itchy TB/ID cross mare. She doesnt have regular sweet itch but does rub her mane and tail - no signs of classical sweet itch in that it there is no thickened skin or plaques etc. Have tried just about everything including Avon skin so soft, stuff from the vet, all the usual creams and potions and nothing works. Has anyone tried the Rambo sweet itch hoody? Does it work. This is a 16.1 mare built like a tank. Also she has been off work for 2 years due to leptospirosis but we are hoping to start her off in the Spring but she needs a mega-wide saddle. Ideally would love to get her a WOW to fit but we just dont know how she will take to life under saddle again. She has a x-x-x wide saddle from Native Saddle pony but this no longer fits her. Does anybody know anywhere where I could pay to hire a v.v.v. wide saddle just to try and get her back to work. I have heard the Micheala Ling saddles are good but again they are well over £1000. Would pay to hire one though!! Any thought much appreciated. Thanx

How have you differentiated between sweetitch and just itching? If it happens spring and summer it's probably mild sweetitch - there are varying degrees but they are all an allergy to the culicoides midge. I need to get Caspar a new rug (trashed the last one cos I didn't put it on early enough) but I'd like to get one in 2 pieces (head/neck and body) because I found the boett just too much of a struggle. He didn't mind it so much, it was me being totally unco-ordinated, just hated having to get it off and on so that I really didn't ride as much as I would have liked. Any recommended ones?

Hello and welcome!! Can't help with the itchy, sorry. I have a Barefoot Cheyenne treeless for my lad and I have fitted it perfectly to a Percheron with no withers at all. Where in the country are you as someone may have what you are looking for for a trail??

I have a rambo sweetitch hoody. My horse has mildish sweetitch, he rubs his top of neck, tail and ears but never to the point of breaking the skin. I had the hoody new last summer and it lasted about 2 months (thug with rugs) to its defense though he is very bad with rugfs, the body, unlike his boett, didn't get any holes, but the tail flap wasn't very secure and came straight off. The material did pil abit round the neck after he had been rubbing, but stayed quite strong. I wrote a letter to horseware with some sugestions to improve the rug and they very nicely sent me a new one, which I shall use on him this year. This year though my best bet is to keep him stabled at night, wheras last summer he was out 24/7 and so got more itchy. he will be out during the day wearing this rug. I have tried just about evry type of sweetitch rug and fly sheet on the market (except Fal which shall be my next try, unless rambo develop the hoody further) and rambo has been the only one not to rip easily. Boett rugs are great but tear very quickly. as do the icelandic rugs. Normal fly sheets are to baggy so rambo seems to be a good middle ground.

Thanks Natalia, pretty much what I thought. Caspar isn't too bad, like yours, just neck and base of his tail, so I may try the Rambo if nothing better is suggested. Time to buy it soon - in my experience it needs to go on AGES before they would normally start to rub if it's to stand a chance of lasting.

If it is sweetitch, then try Avon's Woodland Fresh (I think they may have renamed it but ask as they will know what you mean). The dry oil spray is what I have used on my pony for the past 5 years and it actually works! My vet advised it as I had tried all manner of lotions and potions. I'd asked him about the possiblity of her having a cortisone injedction but he said it could cause laminitis and recommended this as other clients of his had found that it worked. It works for my girl and is nt expensive. The only problem is I am sick of the smell of it and I end up wearing it too! I'd be interested in knowing if there are any that it doesn't work on. Use it from April to November approximately.

Be careful with the Avon stuff - patch test first as my TB had a skin reaction to it (was hoping to use the SSS oil as lots of people say its a really good fly repellent).

Hi ajb, my section a also gets very itchy in spring / summer, I was going to save and get him a boett for next year but have found these on the web - divoza.com/shop/a.visit/en. Have been told they are almost identical to the boett. As for saddles, I have a shire x cob with no shape whatsoever he's in a GFS Haflinger extra, its the only leather saddle I could find to fit him!
