Talk to your vet, write down what you can afford to pay back each month, ie £100 a month over 8 months and try to add more if you can to pay it off earlier... most vets will understand, especially if you have had problems from your insurance company. I have insurance with E&L and they paid out for removal of a lump and ongoing treatment due to infection without any problems, they wrote to me a week after the vet's bill was sent to them asking if I would accept the 'full amount' minus the excess and once I replied the cheque was with me 4 days later. If the insurers are trying to wriggle out of paying on a technicality, it often works to threaten them with bad publicity, in the equestrian press (and web sites) if they are horse specialists. Go through all the normal processes first, and if that doesn't work, say you'll write to H & H etc to point out that you paid the premium on time and now they are refusing to pay. I once did that on the advice of a vet. I doubted it would work because I was small fry to them, not a huge customer, but this vet, who did a lot of insurance work at the time told me they would take it seriously because their business is 99% made up of small customers like me. It worked a treat, but you're absolutely right - the last thing you need when you have been through stress and worry with a sick animal is to fight a long drawn out battle, specially if you're not a jack russell terrier like me! The very best of luck with it.

Yes, they can, but if you've made an agreement with your vet why should they do that? The cheques would probably bounce anyway. Anyway, plenty of ideas from everyone as usual.

Thanks again everyone. Secretary needs to speak to the vet who carried out the treatment because he messed up the bill anyway, so she is calling tomorrow and we can discuss it then...hate it! No ui'm not with E+L, Horse and Rider Insurance Direct (HRID). They have a lower premium, i think this is the problem - you get what you pay for. And i changed the company because i ran into money difficulties and couldn't afford the renewal quote of my other insurers - well that serves me right. But they should still pay. For instance, it says on my policy doc. that i am covered up to 500 for alternative treatment (eg physio). BUT they now tell me that it is only 200 for any ONE treatment of alternative cover. So i could have had 200 on physio (baring excess) 200 on mmm let me see, homeopathy, then maybe a sprinkle of Osteopathy for good measure if i felt like it??? Pants. And it is not clear, but now i know, i can read it in that way and it makes me feel silly for not picking up on it. THEN they decided that because the vet was there to assist the physio and give an examination (not to mention the initial diagnosis), they would only cover part of that as the sedative injections and call out fees were connected to the physio for which i had exceeded my limit. All they paid for were the x-rays she had and part of the call out fees. ALSO they have decided to stick an indorsment on my renewal for next year regarding third party. I will not be covered if my mare was to injure another person or animal because on her vet history that they examined when i made my claim, it says that in 2002 she was exibiting dangerous behaviour (she had problems which i have overcome with her and is now a big bundle of cuddles!) Kas i have already exhuasted my credit limit. I am in deep water after my life had a massive turnaround last year. I was just about keeping head above water until now. Horses are not the best company to keep when you run out of money. But i couldn't sell her as she had massive behaviour troubles. She probably would have been PTS. It took me two years to get a diagnosis i had suspected all along and was told time and time again that she was mad, not in pain. It's frustrating because if people had just listened to me and seen past the little blonde girl with the wild mare she felt sorry for, it would have saved me a good 2 grand anyway! Never mind, up and on. She is fine now, pain free for the first time in her life, but i will never be able to ride her again. If i can just get this bill paid in a way that wont pee the vets off too much, i can know it was all worth it, she's a beautiful creature, she didn't deserve to be PTS, so the treatment had to be done.

Ooops! Just realised what i have done! Can't threaten them with bad publicity as i just accidently did that above! Anyway, E+L are suposed to be pants but it looks like lilaclowmax had no problems from them, horses for courses and all that i guess.
