well just came from the xmas ride and it was great i haven,t rode otter for about 8 months as he had an injury and they i was to busy with work, so he has had a long holiday. He can be a bit hot headed so i was ready for anything today but he behaved perfectly as though i had never not stopped riding him, we only walked as he needs fittening and he had one mishap with some people up scaffolding (very scary for him) and he got a bit excited in the woods but he is so responsive, and i actually think all this time off has built up the trust between us (i had only rode him 5 times before his accident) on the ground and the results are brilliant whilst riding. i must say though my legs are a bit achy

Oh that's lovely, you must be delighted! We are going out on Christmas Day across the green lanes to my house for Buck's Fizz. There will be five of us - our friends who own the place where Bobby is lucky enough to live, their two daughters and me. This will be the first time Bobby has been out with four of his friends, but I think he will be fine. We are having breakfast at the yard first, with my hubby and my mum then going back by car to get the drinks ready for us.
You never know, might get a bit more confident after a drink (or two) and come back a bit faster than we get over there!!! Happy Christmas MaryWelsh and here's to lots more successful and happy rides for you in 2006 x

umm the big grin is starting to wear off as i try to cross my legs ouch but yes i am excited about working him again and with him being a pacer we are hopefully working towards some pleasure rides next yr as he is extremely fast and smooth in trot (except for the wobbling from side to side) the thing is he came to me in jan, nervous, food aggressive, headshy, basically labelled a nutter and really i think he needed the time just to be a horse again, for the past 8 months he has had a life of reily, even arometherapy massages (which i highly recommend) and hopefully for all those riders lacking confidence it might give them the urge to get on their horse and enjoy

Your horse sounds as though he has found the perfect owner; he is obviously responding to your kindness. I took a 16.2hh mare on loan a year ago; she had similar issues, and I have done the same as you, giving her time to settle, lots of ground work, lots of confidence building excersizes, and gradually built up a bond of trust. After reading your post, I smiled to myself because I know just how you are feeling, it is a great acheivement and is worth every minute we spend with our horses. I went out for a ride today, and my OH rode with me (he only started riding this year) and we had a lovely peaceful, quiet hack out on the hill just before the rain set it. It was fantastic! The horse my OH rides is a coloured cob who used to have tantrums, but he seems to enjoy being ridden by my OH and is so well behaved; my OH has seen a Monty Demo and has been keen to put what he has learned into practice; he did lots of groundwork with the Dually and has never (touch wood!) had a bad experience with him; once though, the coloured cob got a little upstight and played up, but my OH was firm but kind and he settled down. We both feel that our horses are so willing to please as a rule, we tend to give them the benefit of believing them when they get upset, and try to understand what is wrong; we don't always learn what upset them, but do our best to calm their fears.
