I have just bought a nearly new thorowgood maxam saddle off ebay with the 'fish' insert systems and I am extremely impressed! I have got it to an absolutely perfect fit for poppy and its also super comfy! The fish are great and so easy to use, I ended up putting the saddle on the narrowest fitting which I did not expect to do but it fits on that so thats where it will stay (well atleast until she changes shape - again!) The elastic girth is great too as are the stirrups! I am so impressed with it, would definately buy another one if i need to!

How on earth do you get a saddle on a fish ;D Seriously though can you explain what it is like?

They're little plastic wedges that slip into pockets either side of the tree points, thin one for half size, thick one for a full size change. I think that even the budget maxam saddles come with them now. Good on Thorowgood for adding something like this to their saddles, they already have a horse friendly range of different fits, things like that can only help make horse owners in general more aware of saddle fit issues.

I paid £100 with girth, stirrup straps, stirrup irons, numnah and of course the saddle! Which i thought was quite a bargain! Jinglejoys; the fish is a little plastic fish shape which you slot in the saddle at the front which alters the width of the saddle, you can get narrow ones and wide ones to allow you to make your saddle wider ao narrower. A similar idea to the easy change gullet system, well it has the same effect but without having to buy the gullets. They explain it better on the thorowgood website as i'm not too good at explaining things lol; www.thorowgood.com/english/fish.htm

I have to admit I have some doubts about this - wouldn't the inserts create pressure points?

belle the inserts creates no pressure at all and they come with three different sizes, my saddle fitter recommended this saddle as otters shape would change alot, we had tried lots of different saddles before this and everyone didn,t fit at some part of the saddle

I've heard that lots of back specialists/top class saddle fitters recommend Thorogood if the client can't afford a really top quality saddle - they rate the trees very highly.

Gem, have you tried equitack for a second hand synthetic as they sometimes have a couple in? If they don't have any then Drury farm saddlery nearly always have some second hand ones in-this shop is in wakefield i think, i can give you their telephone number if you like? I think these saddles are excellent, I had never been particularly keen on synthetics before, but my friend swares by them, and with my mare always changing shape I thought this would be a better option for me than my leather one as this is now to narrow for her.

Beryl has one of these as well. I am thrilled with it. I having been trying to get some weight off her so being able to adjust the width has been very useful. I paid £180 for mine brand new.

I've only trialled one rather than used it for any length of time but the fish go in on the outside of the saddle and appear to narrow the whole of the gullet, not just a fish sized bit. Stef, if you're in West Yorkshire I think Hey Farm Saddlery are Thorowgood stockists, or at least they used to be
