Thank you everyone for replying. I am still getting the hang of this. I have put on a couple of replies but they don't seem to be appearing on this page - not sure why?? Anyway I was doing more schooling and having some lessons before the accident but still was lazy. When I went to put the saddle on earlier this week he was really lashing out with his back legs - is he saying something to me??
I have had a look at the Bach flower site and it looks interesting - I will have another read of it and probably give it a try. I am willing to try anything.
I don't think I am going to do anything though now until early next year when I may feel more like persevering when the weather gets better! Whatever I do I don't know if I will be doing the right thing - do we ever? I am going to give my Monty Roberts friend a ring (who first helped me with temperament problems) to see what she thinks.
I never knew how much help this site could be. Thanks again everyone xx

Hi, New here so hope I haven't repeated anything anyone has already suggested. I would rigorously investigate discomfort with him. If he drags his front feet this badly I would investigate wither/neck issues, personally I think the best way to understand this further is via a registered and vet recommended Mc Timony Chiropractor. I would also want advice regarding his muscular development. If he has spent most of his life avoiding discomfort he may need remedial work to rebuild correct muscle. Sounds really demoralising for you and he is a lucky boy to have such a caring owner!

Where are you based Louise - perhaps we could reccomend other people, he does seem to have tack/back issues?

Hi siennamum McTimmoneys are not the only registered chiropractors! In fact, the McTimmoney school just stopped graduating chiropractors. I would say get a registered chiroprator or osteopath of some description, rather than a "backman", or other type of manipulative therapist that does not offer the reassurance of being regulated properly.

I agree with what everyone above has said to check his back and try bach flower remeides ect. and i think it would be a good idea to give him a break over the winter when the weather is bad and maybe just spend more time with him brushing him so you both enjoy yourself and relax and then have another go at sorting the riding out when the weather gets better. Maybe you could just take him out walks in the headcollar and agian just have fun! Hope you find your solution and let us all know how you are getting on! xx

Dear Louise
I've just got into this chat room lark myself; how wonderful it is. First of all, I would like to congratulate you with your perseverence with your Arab; he has obviously had a hell of a time in the past to make him so "grumpy". He is lucky to have you.
I'm no expert, but I do think that a small step in the right direction is much better than a big one in the wrong direction ie take things very gently with him and praise him for every small achievement. I sought the advice of an RA and was absolutely stunned by the knowledge that I gleaned in a short space of time. You could also try reading some of the many books written by Kelly, Monty and Michael Peace, to name but a few.
Good luck.
Carole
