8-)Hi Nicola----I can't vote 'cos my 3 (rising 4yr old ) is rugged 'cos she feels the cold (and she's for sale) The others aren't 'cos they feel warm! (none of them are ridden however)

I have not rugged so far even though it has been snowing and is about 2 below, I think it depends on the horse and the situation. Red is coping fine with the temp and is looking fantastic. someone told me that you heat from within and as long as you have got that right the horse can cope with whatever the weather throws at him. I feel too many people are too eager to rug their horses at the first sign at a drop in temp, others its a fashion statement and dress them up like dolls, I am all for keeping things as natural as possible and interfering only when absolutely necessary.

Yes he is fully clipped in the winter and has lots of rugs! I hate the thought of him having to wear a damp rug. In the summer he will sometimes wear a rain sheet or a summer sheet if it is rainy or chilly or whatever. But mostly hes naked in summer. i love rugs

Have gone for option 3. Marigold has a low chaser clip at the moment as we start training for endurance season on Jan 1st (!) so needs a rug in this cold, white weather. Otherwise her very long, think coat suffices when she doesn't have a go-faster stripe!

Robin is fully clipped, in at night and rugged all the time except the summer months when he only wears a fly sheet (he's allergic to fly bites)
The others are fully clipped and living out with big rugs on, and they all look very well, if a little on the fat side! Who says fully clipped horses can't live out?

I'm ditto Varkie - mine only have lightweight rugs to wear in extremes (ie. right now !!). They're hardy little shetties and have such super thick coats, but when it's bitterly cold with an accompanying wind I do pop their rugs on for some extra assistance to block out the cold.

Kofi (Arab)has a bib and belly clip and has 24/7 access to his stable at nights. During the day, his field is very exposed and there is no shelter. He absolutely hates being wet and cold so he gets rugged then, even in summer (lightweight rug) rather than be constantly wet if there is any wind. His normal mode is naked, though, even in the cold as long as it is sunny and dry.
However, I can't stand the thought that he might be cold at night so if the temperature drops below zero, he wears a mediumweight rug and at the moment, with it falling to minus 7 some nights,he is wearing a 350g one but I think he is a bit warm in it, I have to say. They do say that horses would rather be too cold than too hot but I can't sleep thinking he might be freezing so I freely admit that the heavy rug is for my peace of mind and not neccessarily for his needs. He gets adlib hay for internal central heating as does the Shetlandx yearling who doesn't seem to feel the cold at all so is not rugged although I am going to get him a lightweight rainrug as soon as finances allow - I know that, in the wild, these ponies wouldn't wear rugs but they would seek shelter, which mine can't.

Mine's rugged, but he hasn't put on much of a winter coat and he is halfway up a mountain. It's cold tonight--he's in a mediumweight full neck rug and I can't decide whether to go up and put an under rug one--not sure I could ever go down the no-rug route! He loves rugs though--it's the only thing he stands still for and if you try to take a rug off on a cold day he gets really peeved....

Flynn has a rug on right now - he hates getting wet and then gets cold with the snow falling. It's a M/W one, but he probably only wears it about 2 weeks of the year.

Rugged
I hate to see finer types with no rugs. Natives have evolved to stand the weather in this country but the finer types havent, theyve evolved for warmer climates and I believe its unfair to leave tb types with no rugs in winter

Mags - LOL at the hardy natives! My little Welsh B lad would tell you different! He positively drops weight while you watch if he is unrugged! Last yr was my first winter with him and I was horrified at the weight he lost in such a short time despite the forage I was pumping into him, rugged he is much happier and will bomb around with my hairy NF mare, unrugged, he will stand and shiver by the gate to come in, he does look like a hairy teddybear but seems to have really thin skin compared to her? She dosen't even notice if it's hailstones and force 10 gales and will quite happily continue to graze in storms whilst the little lad shivers and whimpers by the gate !

Bobby is rugged day and night. Starts off with a rainsheet October time which does him most of the time. Also has a MW and HW rug as well. Has only ever worn the HW three times as doesn't really need it. All his rugs have detachable neck covers, but they are on most of the time with the weather as it is now.
