My vet has recently prescribed Atarax for my horse. Its a human antihistamine. Has anyone else had these or other antihistamines prescribed by vet ? What dose did you use ? What results did you get ?
Thanks

I've often wondered why anti-histamine wasn't prescribed to horses, to tell you the truth! Use them on myself but no-one I know whose horses suffer allergies has ever used it. Interesting to see whether it works, tho in people sometimes you have to switch between all the different sorts til you fing the right one.
BTW very dilute lavender oil (one drop to a mug of water) is a very good wash for insect bites on humans. Might reduce itchiness on horses too. But not to be used if the sufferer is going to be out in sunlight--but ok for dusk til dawn perhaps?

The problem with antihistamines is they arent going to stop a bad allergy and regular use decreases there effect

the best thing for sweet ich is a think called benzyl benzoate, Benzyl benzoate (ben-ZILL ben-ZOE-ate ) is used to treat lice and scabies infestations. This medicine is believed to be absorbed by the lice and mites and to destroy them by acting on their nervous system. You can get a bottle from a chemist, and all you do is pour loads on the mane and tail to start off and rub it in. then just add a little everyday. and it really stops them itching. as they stop you can start doing it every other to every third day,

Thanks, for the last couple of years I have used Benzyl benzoate, but recently its doesnt seem to have been so effective. At the moment I am using a mixture of Benzyl benzoate, surgical dpririt and citronella and it seems to be stopping her rubing, (for now), or maybe its the antihistamines

My mare was on about 25 Piriton a day at one stage and it definitely helped keep her allergies at bay. At her worst, she was on steroids and antibiotics. However, we never managed to get on top of the problem until we moved yards - she is still itchy and I have to watch her, but obviously her main allergen was at the other yard. She also itches if she has carrots, though, so she's got some strange problems!

I have tried most things over time and heartily recommend benzyl benzoate and diluted hibiscrub as a wash (but washed off carefully afterwards). Otherwise, Hilton Herbs' Top Coat herbal fornula is good at calming things down, and Feedmark does a skin supplement called Equidermis that was next on my list to try.
The Piriton was definitely good but it's not ideal for the long term. What I'm trying to say is that I had better success in trying to find the cause, it wasn't just midges with us. She was referred to a clinic and I would still send her there if it came to it - luckily we moved in time!

i've asked my vet about antihistamines and he advised that they aren't affective in horses. I've tried every lotion/potion/remedy on the market to no avail, the only thing that works for us is a Boett Rug.

Our vet prescribed piriton for one of our boys a couple of summers ago. He suffers from sweet itch and is a very allergy prone pony generally in the summer. Fly bites are worse with him and he headshakes when the pollen count is high.
We only give piriton before we ride him. Vet said we can not give it all the time. It's just really to try and make him more comfortable for the time he is having to work. As working obviously makes him hotter and sweatier making him more itchy and uncomfortable. We give 6-10 in an apple at least half an hour before riding and it does help him.

Hi,
I have a very bad sweet itchy pony - I used to give him piraton (vet's knowledge) it seemed to help but not hugely.
He was loads better last year, and this although we have had a few blips - why? My vet has been treating him with an off licence product - dectomax. It;s a cattle wormer and is injected under the skin every 6 - 8 weeks or longer if needed. It can be totally effective in a lot of horses.
Mine is very bad (we've cosidered putting him down) and it certainally takes the edge off for him - makes him less hysterical. He is currently in a Rambo sweet itch hoody (he destroy's Boetts with his feet - unshod) and has a repellent of cider vinegar, Avon SSS and water, a homeopathic spray and cider vin in his feed. I wash him with Dead sea magic shampoo once a week.
This keeps him pretty good - he has a few sores on his face and legs and sheath but they clear up.
It's b****y hard work but hey!
Might be worth talking to your vet about the dectomax - mine do it routinely so do several up in Scotland that I know of. (I'm in Wales)

Thanks everyone. I have had my horse 9 years (since she was 2). In the past she has only ever had the occaisional rub of her mane and tail, has never showed signs of sweet itch. Its only this year she has seemed to got itchy and started to rub a patch of her back on trees, ending up with a small raw patch. I had previously got her a fly sheet, but she rubbed more with it on.(not worn any rugs for ages) When the vet saw her she was quite itchy, he gave her a short course of antibiotics & bute, plus steroid cream and a shampoo to use every 3rd day. He also prescribed Atarax tablets which are a human drug. This was about 2 weeks ago and fingers crossed, she is not rubbing like she was. The hair on the small patch is almost fully grown back.
The last couple of days have been rainy and colder though, so we will see what happens when it warms up again.
I am also giving her Naf D Itch supplement, using the benzyl benz mixture at the top of her tail and both sides of base of her mane. I also use Avon SSS on her mane and tail.
I have thought about a few fly rugs including the Boett, but am not sure if she would tolerate it, or trash it quite quickly.

What exactly is the action of the benzyl benzoate - just wondered because I recently looked after a friends pony with sweet itch and had to apply it every day . One day I had a scratch on my hand and when I was rubbing the bb in , it got into the cut and it hurt like hell !! My friend told me it deadens the nerve endings which sounds a bit drastic - after experiencing the pain I did from it getting in one small scratch I'm sure I'd never use it on a horse with open rub sores or sensitive skin, it must be agony for them !
